The Producers--NYC--Last Minute Ticket Prices??

Kevin: I don't think your analogy of "the house of a friend" is a good one. This is a public forum of mostly anonymous people, answering questions, giving advice and expressing opinions.
P.S.: Incidently, the hourly rate of your hotel room is a lot more reasonable than the Producers. $250 for dinner doesn't seem out of line with many Manhattan restaurants. I note you didn't mention the price of the airline tickets, lots of people fly 1st class via frequent flyers miles, very few pay out of their own pocket for the privilege, unless they can write it off as a business expense. In any event, enjoy the Producers, I hope you feel it was worth the cost.

Lori-who played in Nathan Lanes part? Was he any good? Did you feel you missed out since he wasn't there? I was wondering since they are saying that money will be refunded for tickets for the time that he is out, which was to be about 6 weeks. Everyone has different ideas about what is important in life, some people just don't want to spend hundreds and hundreds of dollars on theater tickets...I really do not think they should be insulted for this.
Also, how was Noises Off? We are seeing it Dec 30th.? Thanks~

This thread certainly has gone far afield.
To clear up a few possible misconceptions:
1. Nathan Lane has missed some performances (not six weeks recently, though) because of polyps on his throat. He is back doing six shows a week, missing the matinees on Wednesday and Saturday.
2. His understudy is Brad Oscar, who usually portrays the German/Nazi author of "Springtime for Hitler" in the show. And reports are that he does quite well.
3. As great as Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick are as the leads, I think the show is strong enough to succeed quite well when either or both are not performing.
4. I'll be willing to bet that the show will continue to sell out and draw raves when they leave in March, as reported.
To be continued....

Thanks for the news update Howard, but I was asking Lori who had actually been there .. I thought that the Times said that N Lane would be out the full 6 weeks, thus avoiding surgery on the polyps, and that he cannot speak at all in order to rest his vocal chords..don't you think that they ARE the show and that when they stop and someone else takes their place that the tickets will be more available. We bought our tickets last spring, for the performance October 3rd.

Mia,
Nathan Lane performed last night. I understand he is no longer doing matinees. He sounded fine, although he had not performed since Saturday pm. I understand his understudy, Gary Beach, is great in the part - in fact their facial expressions are somewhat similar.

Mia: Noises Off was great, particularly if you like British farce. Great cast and best of all we paid half price via a mailing we received back in September. Enjoy the show.
Howard: That's what's great about Fodor's forum the threads do go far afield. And that's evil-doers, not evil person.

Lori, my understanding is that Nathan Lane wasn't doing matinees for six weeks. The theater listings in the newspaper still include his name. And, from experience, shows do not play games like that when a performer is out for an extended period.
As for how the show will do, I still say that as great as the two of them are, especially Nathan Lane, the show will continue to sell out after they've gone. Perhaps, the demand for tickets will not be as great, but I predict it will still be a hot ticket. (PS: I'm sure the producers are looking for some fairly big names for Broadway replacements and for the road company.)

I've just got to tell my "Producers" story. Shortly after Christmas last year, a good friend mentioned that he had been given a ticket to this new musical called "The Producers" as a holiday gift, but really didn't like (1) musicals, (2) Mel Brooks, (3) matinees. Would I take it off his hands? As a result I saw the show just a few days before it opened - for free!
The bottom line here is that I'm glad I saw it, especially in view of the mileage I've gotten out of the above story. But there are any number of productions, amateur and professional, that I've enjoyed as much. I guess it all comes down to how much one has in disposable income, and priorities in spending it.
Even in previews, I felt that Nathan Lane was struggling. It's a hugely demanding role. Matthew Broderick is adorable. His voice may indeed be "mediocre," but it is just right for the part he's playing. The blonde bombshell, whose name I don't remember, held the whole show together. But then again, this is a travel board.....

Howard, I stand corrected on Nathan Lane's understudy. But I did hear that Nathan Lane was not doing any more matinees. Whatever! Cady Huffman plays the part of the 'blonde bombshell' Ulla. She is magnificent, but if you've every seen the movie they beefed up the part for Broadway. Not that there's anything wrong with that. As an aside, Nathan Lane did a fair amount of adlibbing the other night, which made the show even more special. There were quite a few funny moments, unscripted, that he jumped all over. there is talk of offering contract extensions to him and Matthew come March when they're up, but these are incredibly demanding roles, and since he is having trouble now I would be surprised is he renewed.

I'll never get over my good luck of getting front row center tickets to see
The Producers last February while they
were in previews in Chicago, payed something like $70 each for the tickets!
We have never had so much fun at any theatrical show in our lives, just an outstanding time & blown away by all cast members! It's worth what it's worth to each person & if you think having one of the best nights of your life is worth $500 or more, go for it!
