The Plaza Hotel in New York City & Recommended Things to Do
As you know, you are going to one of the most renowned hotel in the world. The rooms can be small, but since you won a package, you're probably set. If you don't like your room, ask to switch - even non-famous people are entitled to have what they want. One of the most wonderful things to do in New York is have high tea at the Plaza; it's a wonderfully elegant experience. A fabulous restaurant is Felidia (Northern Italian) (expensive), and if you like deli food at all, you should experience the Carnegie Deli, famous for mile high sandwiches, among other things. The Gotham Bar & Grill is a very chic place to be. If you're into cocktails, have a drink at the bar in the Four Seasons restaurant (I wouldn't eat there, however.) If you're looking for something non-traditional to do, go to the Astor Place Theatre (not anywhere near Broadway) and see "Tubes" by the Blue Men Group - very different, but lots of fun. My favorite museum is the Frick Museum, an absolute must see, which may be near the Plaza, but I can't remember. Don't be intimidated by those rumors - New Yorkers can be gruff, but they're also lots of fun - remember, most people who frequent any place are not famous, so they have to be nice to stay in business.

Whatfollows is the Fodor's review of the Plaza.
I would definetely pick up Kay Thompson's 'Eloise'(Simon&Schuster) and try Felidia (East 58th) if you like Italian food (and who doesn't).
"Occupying the entire southwest corner of Central Park West and 5th Avenue, with its
front-yard fountain and unsurpassed location opposite Central Park and F.A.O. Schwarz, the
Plaza is probably the most high-profile of all New York hotels. Donald Trump bought it (in
1988), the fictional Eloise ran riot in it (and her "portrait" adorns the Palm Court), and film
upon film has featured it--from North by Northwest in the 1950s and Breakfast at Tiffany's and Barefoot in the Park in the 1960s, through the 1971 Plaza Suite and the more recent Sleepless in Seattle, Scent of a Woman, and Home Alone 2. And does the institution live up to the hype? Reports are good. Furnishings, though still hotel-like in most units, are of high quality. The color schemes are in burgundy or teal blue; fresh, floral-patterned quilted spreads grace the large beds. Bathrooms have fluffy new towels and toiletries. One real advantage here is the size of guest rooms--only a handful of other classic properties can offer similar spaciousness in nearly all accommodations. One thing's for sure: Even if it's your first time in New York, a quick nip at the dimly lit Oak Bar or a stroll by the fin-de-siècle Palm Court will make you feel part of what makes the city tick. We stayed at the Plaza over Thanksgiving and had one of the best vacations we have ever had! I was afraid the size of our room (med. price range) was going to be unbearable but what a wonderful surprise! It was very spacious!!! I've since found out that the Plaza has the bigger sized rooms of all NY hotels. So your suite I'm sure will be lovely. We ate at the Palm Court and were put upstairs over in a corner (perhaps because we had children? I wonder....) and I personally felt the food there was overpriced but what the heck as you say How often will we be in NYC again--go for it!! However the Oak Bar was the Best!!! The martinis were great and they even stocked Barbados Mount Gay rum which impressed me endlessly. All the sandwiches we had there were yummy and even off the menu requests were accomodated without despair. We ate at other places and were always treated grandly, everyone everywhere was nice to us. Have a great time--I envy you staying at the most famous hotel in NYC.
