we have a spare weekend in so. cal following work obligations, but the oscars mean the best la beach hotels are sold out.
i would like an oceanfront experience, but i am so fearful that the new hyatt huntington will be a) not that nice and b) overpriced and c) boooor-ing.
help! please??

The Hyatt Regency Huntington might not be a bad choice for you...the rooms are well furnished, nice pool areas, restaurants/bars on site, bridge over PCH to the sand...and you can walk to the pier area where there are a lot of restaurants, bars, etc. We booked online at the hotel website and did not think it was overpriced...this is a pretty nice property!

The Montage in Laguna Beach is supposed to be wonderful, or try the St. Regis in Dana Point (although it's across the street from the beach)...
For a less expensive option, The Blue Lantern inn has nice rooms in Dana Point with great harbor views...and rooms w/ fireplace and whirlpool tubs. Very nice.
