Nunan's in Cape Porpoise (near Kennebunkport), Maine. No reservations, you may have to stand in line, it's casual dress.

It's difficult to mess up a boiled lobster! If you find a lobster pound where you select your critter and then they boiled it for you, that's probably the most basic and authentic way to go. Bailey's in Pine Point (the north end of Old Orchard Beach) does this. There is a huge place in the same area called the Clam Bake where you order your meal at a window (like McDonald's) and then find your seat, and there seem to be thousands! They call you when your order is ready. It's not elegant either but it is a restaurant rather than a take-away, and it's ALWAYS jam packed so they must be doing something right! It's off Rt. 1 Saco, then down to Pine Point. We try not to go during prime time. There are lots of these sorts of places all over the Maine coast, and you can't really find a bad lobster down in Maine. Have a good time.

I have to disagree with the above poster about Barnacle Billy's in Ogunquit. Went there in August of 1997 and paid about $12(?) or so for a relatively small (under 1.5 pound) lobster with corn on the cob. It tasted Ok but was tough and rubbery. A couple of days later we went to a lobster pound that had been recommended in Frommer's a few miles north of Camden, and the difference was remarkable! Paid about $7 or so for the same-sized lobster and a side of chips and a soda, but it tasted unbelievable and melted in your mouth. It was just a picnic-table place, but SO much better -- plus the lobster had a new shell so you could just peel the shell right off and didn't need a cracker. By all means, ask around about where the local lobster pounds are -- they tend to be the best. Fresher and cheaper! My friend and I still talk about that lobster. Stay away from the tourist traps.

Nunan's Lobster Hut in Cape Porpoise had the best lobster - they steam rather than boil them - fantastic

Do a Search for a recent posting called something like "Where can I go to eat lobster every day..." or something like that. It's full of good information on Maine and other places.
