The best crab cakes in Annapolis, MD

I've read all the posts on this subject, but most are 1-2 years old. Davis's Pub in Eastport and Fred's restaurant were mentioned a few times. Are these places still the best? I'm looking for 100% jumbo lump.

Still the best. Fred's being #1. The Edgewater Restaurant (Mayo Road, Edgewater - south of Annapolis) has third best crab cakes. The Best in Baltimore would be Angelina's on Harford Road. They have a website for ordering www.crabcake.com All the others, Cantlers Riverside, Mike's crabhouse, Phillips, Carrols Creek, Buddy's, Maryland Inn can't compare.

Your welcome. By the way, a great crabcake recipe can be found on the Old Bay Seasoning can. Follow it to a T using lumpmeat but make sure you refrigerate the mixture an hour before you form the cakes so they will hold together. And broil them or pan fry with butter (not oil). Best place to buy live crabs? Rey's Crabs in Severna Park on Ritchie Highway. They sell not only by size at great prices but also by fullness. So you won't get a big light crab thrown in with the other big heavy crabs.

My wife tells me that Michael Rorke's crabcakes are excellent. Harrison's at Tilghman used to be great but has declined since the old matriarch died. The Robert Morris Inn in Oxford has the best crab cakes in my opinion.

I just emailed this thread to my sister who has a son that just began study at the academy. How expensive is Fred's? Can anyone else comment on how expensive these places are?

My sister was told I am guessing by the academy that Buddy's was a good place for crab cakes but she found them to be expensive. There is a restaurant up here in NYC that ships up Maryland Crab cakes daily. That is remarkable to me. I understand mail order but daily trucks?

Fred's is on Soloman's Island Road (Rt.2) one block south of the West Street Intersection. You will se a back shaped liked a sailboat across the street from it. It is a very unremarkable building in a drab part of town. Not dangerous, just drab. Fred's isn't expensive. Dinners from $10-$25. You would not dine there for the atmosphere. For that stick with downtown Annapolis.
In St. Michaels try the St.Michaels Crab House on Mulberry Street. This is a nice waterfront restaurant with a casual atmosphere. Good crab eating there, too.
To Mike: John Stevens is a good local New Orleansish style waterfrount restaurant in Fells Point. Good sushi bar. Crabcakes good but not like Angelina's or Fred's. Try their Creole Brochettes with a wonderful mustard sauce.
Tammy- Forget Buddy's for crabcakes. They have a great view of downtown though if you get a window table.

I meant a BANK shaped like a sailboat. Not a back.

Thanks Charlie. I can't wait to try Angelina's or Fred's.

To those of you complaining about the price of crabcakes... A good crabcake is PRICELESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont know where Solomon's Island Road is, but Fred's is in Parole, just off Route 50 west of Annapolis. At least, the Fred's I know that has exquisite seafood of any kind.

About the Old Bay recipe, I have used it with fish when there was no crab meat in the freezer. Stil very good.
