I remember the days when A&W had family names for burgers, momma burger, daddy, teen and baby..

I keep thinking an EMT will find me with a bloated stomach and say to his crew, "Dude, she had that burger list. It's too late"".

Yes, in Milwaukee Elsa's always get the best burger from the readers, but the critics usually choose Mazos.
They grind their own beef on the premises. Plus you can get a beer.
It's not in a trendy downtown location, but mmmmmmm..... I'm getting hungry just thinking about them.

Can't believe I missed this post first time around.

Broiler Burger in Bellaire, Texas.

Simply the best, better than all the rest (that I've ever had).

Take a look at this review and the menu.

The menu and prices are as classic as the burgers.

The best hamburger in the world will be found at The Chocolate Moose, 101 North Main Street, Farmland, Indiana 47340. Just out of this world, all fresh local beef cooked to order, heaven on a bun. This restaurant is a 1950's soda fountain complete with cherry phosphates..

What's the name of the place that was featured on Diners and Dives, where they haven't changed the grease in 50 years? They fry up the burgers in a big pot of grease, then seal it up at night and they keep using the same big pot of grease again and again and AGAIN?

Well, some burgers can linger for years.

traceys2cents are you referring to Dyer's Burger in Memphis, TN? They have not changed their cooking grease since they opened in 1912 making it 99 years old but it is strained daily! Local residents have watched police escorts been used in the past when they have moved to a new restaurant location.

Wonder if they will be doing anything to celebrate their centaury next year?

So old that all the original links are no longer valid pages. Things disapear on the web.

For national chains, Five Guys and Smashburger good. But for the best burgers, I recomend local places:

Bomber Burger http://www.kansastravel.org/wichita/bomberburger.htm and Ty's Diner http://www.kansastravel.org/wichita/tysdiner.htm in Wichita.

Prairie Nut Hut http://www.kansastravel.org/prairienuthut.htm in Altoona, Kansas.

Between the three, I give the edge to Bomber Burger.

Crazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor. It's been featured on Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives, and you are REQUIRED to order in a specific way. If it's winter, they take the snow near the diner and "sculpt" it into snowbears that are so cute, too, so you get food & art in one visit:
http://www.blimpyburger.com/

The burgers at Ann Arbor's Red Hawk restaurant are also crazy-good, but be forewarned they do NOT do carry-out!
http://www.redhawkannarbor.com/index...e=main_page#19

And the burgers at The Sidetrack in nearby Ypsilanti did make it onto the list of "The 20 Hamburgers", and I can attest to the fact they are pretty darned good:

Haab's of Ypsilanti is also pretty wonderful, and their onion rings are a worthy accompaniment:

Come to Michigan, folks!

Jeesh, did you notice that all his nominations were in biggish cities? Didnt he go off the beaten track? Apropos of off the beaten track, I'd like to mention Clamp's in New Milford, CT. If you are ever over that way it's about 4-5 miles north of town on Rte 202. Opened in 1938.

We tried Haab's last summer and I was disapointed and the main dishes. The onion rings were good, but not great. The bread was the best item.

Yes, it is the Great Megalopolis Burger Conspiracy. I think Glenn Beck will devote a blackboard to it tonight.

The link originally posted above no longer works, if you insist on regurgitating a post from 2005, at least make sure the link works. Try this instead: http://www.gq.com/food-travel/alan-r...rger-death-eat

Looks like Alan Richman got a bit of mileage from his research as there are several citations in different magazine for the same article.

Keith, sorry that Haab's disappointed! (Gotta wonder what's going on there.) Pals of mine got married and had their wedding luncheon there. I also like the fact that to thank their customers, once a year they "roll back" their prices for a day to the prices of the year they opened--1934! As you can imagine the line goes down the block! There are a few "drive-in" types of restaurants out in the general vicinity that I've not tried but would like to, but I'm gonna have to wait until the weather gets better...

Some of you folks who've mentioned chain burger places, yes, Five Guys has opened up in a couple of spots not far from here. Not bad, and the servings of fries are HUGE.

"Local" burger places seem to be cropping up now in Ann Arbor. There's a place called @burger that I haven't tried yet, and another place up near University of Michigan's north campus.

Oh, yeah, and Fraser's Pub in Ann Arbor, how could I forget? I have tried their burgers and fries. They've been around forever, have a local loyal following (not on campus) and are great!

Anyone been to Hackney's in the Chicago burbs? Have not been there in years but they deep fry the burgers. The onion rings were better. Almost killed my ex-BIL.
