Thanksgiving in San Francisco

I'm from the UK and am going to be in San Fransisco for Thanksgiving. Does anyone know if there's any event or similiar for me to go to / do as a visitor ?

Helen,
Thanksgiving is usually a pretty quiet holiday around here. Many people spend the day at home with their families that Thursday. Many places are closed, but tourist facilites such as some restaurants and the like will be open.

The next day, Friday, is the biggest retail shopping day of the year. Many stores will be crowded, but they will be having sales and lots of holiday merchandise.

For events check www.bayarea.citysearch.com

If you enjoy shopping, downtown S.F. is the place to be on the day after Thanksgiving. (Watch for pickpockets!) There is also an evening show and ceremony during the Thanksgiving holiday when the Christmas tree in Union Square is lit up for the first time -- but I'm not sure which day it is.

Helen, You will probably have the most luck finding a hotel dining room that is serving a traditional Thanksgiving meal. You need to book way ahead, however. The Friday following is a crazy day in San Francisco. Just be glad you are a tourist without a car to park and enjoy the fun. Everything will be very crowded, so if you wanted to do something like the Alcatraz tour, you need to book it now! Another fun thing to do is the "eating your way through Chinatown tour" with Ms. Wong-Torres. It is booked through the SF Historical Society and takes a couple hours on Saturday morning, ending with lunch. Might be good fun coming from the U.K. The advice to be wary of pickpockets is wise (especially on the cable cars where they will snatch your purse and jump off the car, leaving you without). The good news is that this is about the worst crime you could encounter in SF. Also, please plan ahead so you won't be disappointed on this very crowded, popular weekend. Enjoy our pretty little city; the crabs might be starting to come in by then!

This may be a little far fetched, but every year the Auto Show is held at Moscone Convention Center (downtown). You get a chance to see all of the cars from every maker, including some prototypes. If you are interested in auto's, it's something to see!

Check and see if Beach Blanket Babylon will be playing that weekend. It's an only in San Francisco event--a cabaret style event that it is almost impossible to describe. You can find info on by using a search engine.
