Telluride
Thinking of going to Colorado first of February. Thinking of Telluride - only have four nights so need to go to one place. I would like to stay in town - walking distance to shops ; restaurants etc. We are not big skiers. Any advice???

If you're not big skiers, then my advice would be to skip Telluride in the winter.........and go during June, July or August, or even September.
Although Telluride is BEAUTIFUL in the winter (see the latest Budweiser commercial with the Christmas lights that won't light until the Clydesdales and the Budweiser wagon clop down mainstreet), you will be inundated with skiers. And the lodging prices are outrageous during ski season.
The Sheridan Hotel is right on main street in the thick of things......but the town is so small that almost any accommodation is within easy walking distance of the thick of things.

We spent a glorious Summer day in gorgeous Telluride and loved it. I am not sure if you could fill 4 days there if you don't want to ski...it is pretty small!! Maybe Durango or some other cool town that is slightly bigger??

We live an hour from Telluride. There isn't much to do there in winter, if you don't ski. The shops can be seen in a day. The Victorian Inn is conveniently located in town and rates are reasonably priced. But keep in mind that will mean that it is going to attract the younger crowd for that very reason [read that party-type,]It is nothing fancy, but is clean. We are also close to Durango and it is also nice, but not 4 days worthy in winter. Sorry.

I was thinking some more about this. How about staying in Cortez? It is 70 miles south of Telluride and 45 miles west of Durango. It is also near Mesa Verde [which is on the way to Durango]. There are lots of motels here that are nice and far less expensive than Telluride. If this is of interest, let me know and I can give you more info.
