Ugh, OO the nut family has so many pronunciations. I say pea-KAHN and all-mand. The almond ranchers call them A (like in apple) mins. Sounds too wierd for me.
San Ma tayo - San Mateo (bay area) heard it called San Matt eyo. Busted a gut!!!

Yes, was going to mention Loo-a-vull, sort of spoken with marbles in mouth so it comes out Lowl. And Ver-SALES, IN, not as a pompous voice on a canned phone call has it, "Your nearest dealer is in Vair-sigh, Indiana."
Speaking of mispronouciations, a cute young thing on CNN, who obviously was reading from a card and had never been near a barnyard, recently read a human interest story about pigs..I think, because she kept referring to the mother "so" instead of the sow to rhyme with now.

Lets add to the growing list of Massachusetts towns that no one can pronounce:
Haverhill = Hay vrill
Scituate = Sit chu it
Newburyport = New bree prt
Gloucester = glaw stah
And what about the suburb of Toronto Etobicoke = Eh Toe bee coe

Olive Oyl,
Useless celebrity knowledge: Nicole Kidman was born in Hawaii.
As a NC'er it's Pe-CAN, my Virginia relatives say Pe-KAHN (like the wrath of). Also the sister of one of my parents is an ANT (for example: Aunt Bea from The Andy Griffith Show), though those Virginia say it in a way that it rhymes with 'haunt'
The is a small community near Durham spelled Bahama. It's pronounced Ba-HAIM-a so it's not confused with the island.

Here's some from the great state of Kansas:
Olathe--Oh LAY thuh
El Dorado--El door AY dough
Arkansas (River)--Ar KAN sas
(Even though we pronounce the STATE of Arkansas "Ar kan saw" like everyone else, the river is different).
Topeka--toe PEEK uh
This string is fun!!

My lovely bride (as in bridal, not bridle) is always cringing at people that add an "n" to state names ending in "a" when they want to make an adjective. Example - I am going on an Alaska cruise, not an "Alaskan" cruise. An Alaskan is a person from Alaska; a Californian is a person from California. "California cuisine" is one thing; "Californian cuisine" would involve eating Californians. Yuck.
It's like Scotch - something you drink or eat, like Scotch eggs (yuck again.) Scottish is the adjective, or even Scots (which also refers to multiple Scottish persons). Confusing? Nae problem, we're a' Jock Thamson's bairns...

i lived in the california desert for many years and yet still not sure of the correct pronunciation of yucca as in yucca valley.
i always found it interesting that residents of the high desert north of L.A almost never referred to L.A as L.A
but rather as "down below"
