Bob, you could swim in the bay. But it's not exactly the beach. Why don't you make a trip to Caladesi? It will take you maybe 30 minutes or so but it sounds like the water is nice there. And the sand is very nice at Caladesi (near Dunedin).
For park-like areas in Tampa Bay, consider Ben T. Davis Beach along the Clearwater Causeway or Picnic Island in the south-western part of the South Tampa peninsula.

There's Ben T Davis Beach on the south side of Courtney Campbell Parkway (60, between Tampa and Clearwater) close to the Tampa end of the causeway. I personally wouldn't swim there, but lots do and it's usually crowded weekends.
Then there's what locally known as Redneck Riviera off the Gandy. I'm not goin' there either! LOL
I recommended Caladesi Island for Bonniebroad one day of her vacation and they really loved it. It's gorgeous. Reached from Honeymoon Island...no red tide...yet.

I'll be baaaack...Thursday!
Was just reading that Bonnie went back to Caladesi today and is going again tomorrow. She is such a good sport about this mess--it's heartening to see someone with her approach to a rotten (literally) situation.
