taking golf clubs to 4 hawaiian islands
My husband and I are travelling to Maui, the Big Island (Waikoloa), Oahu, and Kauai. We're both taking our golf clubs and have plans to spend 3 weeks (5-6 days on each isle) in Hawaii. Need advice from those of you who travelled w/ your clubs and lugged them from place to place. Did you bring sufficient golf balls, or did you but them there? Which are the "friendliest" courses on each island (after all, it IS Vacation Golf). Thanks for your help

What's your handicap and how serious a golfer are you? I find lugging clubs around a bit of a pain.
If you do bring clubs, bring lotsa balls. Cheaper on mainland.
Re: different course, Princeville in Kauai is stunning but OBSCENELY difficult. Without a doubt one of the hardest courses I've ever played. BTW, on good days I shoot about 41 for 9 holes, bad days 50. On BI, the Mauna Lani courses are fun. Mauna Kea is the best, but more difficult.
Personally, having been to Hawaii now a couple times, I'm not planning on playing much, if at all. Couple reasons:
1. Expensive. Most courses are $100-200. Also, you can't walk.
2. Hawaii is about snorkeling, beaches, hiking and adventure. I can golf at home.
3. I live in SoCal. I can golf year round here. If I were coming from a cold weather climate, I'd probably play.
Hope this helps.

PS. Best course I've played in HI is Manele Bay on Lanai.

We usually ship our clubs over to the hotel. But we only stay on one island anymore. Pretty boring.
Agree w/ CBoy is one aspect. Unless you really have to have your own clubs, plenty of places to rent clubs.
Respectfully disagree with CBoy on the "golf at home" statement.
Guess since I'm landlocked in NoCal and never see an ocean, green mountains, rainbows, whales, etc while I'm golfing, I make it a point to work in a few rounds along w/ other outdoor activities.
I also pick up some golf balls at The Mart Brothers...Kay and Wally.
And there is a place just up from the entrance of the Marriott that sells old golf balls. You have to look closely for the small sign.
Golf friendly course on Kauai, Kukuilono, Kiahuna, Wailua, Lagoons.
P'ville, Poipu & Kiele pretty tuff courses. But very beautiful.
Use a search engine for Hawaiian discount golf sites.

Our game is usually about 90 to 110. I guess I'm mostly concerned about lugging the clubs between islands. We definitely want to play golf on each island (as well as snorkel and sight see). My guess is that it's about $100-$150 each to rent clubs on these courses. We played golf in Nevis (Caribbean) at the Four Seasons and that's what the rental cost was there.

We took advantage of twilight rates on most courses and never paid more than $25 for rentals. This also gives you most of the day to do other fun things, too. Checking ANY luggage is now a pain in the inter-island terminals, so we leave them at home. If you can take the ferry to Lanai from Maui, do not miss the Challenge at Manele. Most beautiful course I've ever played.

As a 12 handicapper, I absolutely love golf on Hawaii. I always bring my own clubs for two reasons..the feel and of course the price. If you aren't weighed down with too much luggage I vote to bring em - rentals can be as high as 50 bucks (I think that's what is was at Manele). My 5 favourite courses in no particular order Plantation, Bay, Challenge at Manele, Poipu, and Princeville. Enjoy.
