Of course Vegas is tacky. What does Liza say in Cabaret? "Divine decadence"?
But the funniest comment in the original post is that once inside all the hotels look alike. That could be said about all the hotels in virtually any city in the world -- EXCEPT Las Vegas. Can anyone honestly say the interior of New York, New York looks even vaguely like Bellagio? Or that the canals in the Venetian make it look exactly like the interior of Mandalay? Or that the Forum Shops at Caesar's looks like the interior of the Mirage? Give me a break. It's one thing to dislike a place, but another to go so blatently wrong in one's discription of a place.

Like i said, once you get past the knok off versions of Paris, New York , Alladin and so on. A slot Machine is a Slot machine, Black jack table is a black jack table. The only hotel that we thought was and the nicest, is the Ballagio. As far as the shops go in the hotels, well let me tell you, i can take the mall here in my town, paint the ceiling with clouds and you will never notice the differance. Most of the shops are high end, so if have deep pockets forget about it.

The only way to destroy Vegas is to stop going there. Of course, I wouldn't want to hold my breath to see it happen. The hoi polloi are tacky and they create and promote tackiness of this sort! Think of the poor souls who chose to live there!!! I'd rather rot in Phoenix!

Ok, Ramz, enough teasing us, please tell me where you live. Since your mall could be mistaken for the one at the Forum Shops, I would love to visit it. I don't need the clouds painted on the ceiling, but I want to eat at the wonderful Chinois on Main that you have in your mall, and one night at Spago. Also I would enjoy the fine Italian restaurant you have inside your mall that is next to the huge fountains. I always feel like I'm eating in Rome when I am there, so I would enjoy it just as much in your mall as I do in Vegas. I was unaware that there was any other mall in the US that has such fine restaurants in them. I also like shopping at Hugo Boss and since your mall has a Boss store, it would be a bonus. The kids love FAO Schwartz so they can play in that store in your mall while I browse the other fine shops. So please tell us what your town is so that I can add it to my list of places to visit. It sounds wonderful.

Las Vegas is to sophistication what Thomas Kincade is to "art". The difference is that Vegas IS FUN. So who cares why?

Ramz,
Why are you so harsh towards Las Vegas? You've only been there once and obviously didn't take the time to enjoy the WORLD-CLASS hotels with all the different themes. I don't understand how you can call NYNY & Paris cheap knockoofs when they're actually smaller versions to scale. The great city of Las Vegas doesn't need people like you who have a Spago, Cartier, or Mandalay Bay in their own town!

Besides Gatlinburg and Niagara Falls, I would have to say South of the Border in Dillon, SC. But hey, a little tackiness in one's life never hurt.

Yes, Vegas is tacky. In a word, "duh". And so is Gatlinburg. I believe there are section to any town that are tacky. If you think that all there is to Vegas is the Strip you're wrong. Ditto for Bourbon Street. Ditto even for Gatlinburg (you know there are mountains and streams there if you get out of your freakin' car and burn a calorie).

Ya know what else is tacky in my opinion? Huge SUVs, golf, Broadway musicals, New York City, suburbs, watercolor paintings, hunter green, navy, burgundy, Volvos, soccer moms, business suits, and corporate office buildings.

One rainy day in Paris France, is worth 5 sunny days in Vegas.

Sure, any idiot knows that Paris is better than Vegas, but what is your point? Like Patrick, I am waiting for your answer as to what your home town is so I can book my next trip there. It sounds wonderful if it is even half as exciting as Vegas and has the places you mention. Or did you make that up?

My two cents.....

When you're in a Vegas mood, it's the best.

When you're in a Paris mood, it's the best.

When you're in a Thailand mood, it's the best.

I love all three of these places. It just depends on my mood which one is my favorite at that moment. They are each very different and offer very, very different experiences.

Vegas is tops for overall variety of hotels, entertainment and dining located in one city. Paris is tops for its place in history, architecture, art, etc. Thailand is tops for doing some of the best shopping of your life and being treated like a queen the whole time you're there even though you're nowhere near being a queen and you're really just a small business owner, taking two weeks off from a normally very hectic, hardworking life.

My motto - Appreciate each place for what it offers.

Lynn

After hanging out on this site for a year or so, I have become convinced I am a tacky person.
1. Although I was turned off by Las Vegas, I adored Branson.
2. I love doing group tours.
3. I wear white sneakers
4. I clip coupons to save money, stop to pick up a penny on the street, and save every cent I can to travel.
5. Tacky I am, happy I am. Happy trails. Marie

I was saying that the hotels that have malls in them like the forum shops looks like any regular malls. I said that if i painted the ceiling with clouds at our local mall here in my home town that it will look like the shops in Vegas. Most of the shops in the forum shops are highend so you can't afford them anyways. So take away the highend shops and it will be just like any ordinary mall.

Sorry and this may offend you, but what right do you have to say that I can't afford high end shops? Sorry, Ramz, you may like your JC Penny and Sears, but I bought a new blazer and several other things at Hugo Boss in the forum shops and guess what? I've seen the same blazer in two other towns and in both cases it was more expensive. You have really shown your ignorance in saying that if you take away the high end shops it will be like any other mall, and then have the nerve to say that because it is high end it is tacky. Sorry, I think you are backwards. In my opinion things that are tacky are "cheap" not high end. I guess what you are saying is that Las Vegas is too high end for you, you can't afford it, therefore it is "tacky". Now I understand where you are coming from. Thank you for clarifying.

Hay Patrick i respect your opinion , all i am trying to say, is that my wife and i have traveled pretty extensively and we thought that Las Vegas was Tacky. If you can afford to buy a coat at Hugo Boss, then all the power to you.

Ramz,
Where do you live that is so great? And if you travel as extensively as you say then why did you choose a "tacky" destination like Las Vegas, the top tourist destination in the country? You and your wife wouldn't know class if it bit you in the behind!

Actually, for the most part, ramz is correct -- Vegas is definitely more of a WHITE TRASH destination than most others!! So, in that respect, it is definitely TACKY beyond words!!!

In all honesty Mike, We had two free airline tickets for anywhere in north America, and we both had a few days off, so we decided to go and check Vegas out because we had heard that it was a fun place to go. It was on a spure of the moment. So all i can say is that we certainly know what class is, and we will definitely not find it in Vegas.

Class does not imply to people you do or do not know what they can and cannot afford.
