My husband and I planned on staying there last January, but checked out ten minutes after checking in. It might have been because we spent the night before at the Lenox and were disappointed, but the neighborhood is definately scarier. We called the Bostonian and got a great deal. It was definately much more convenient and delightful.

The hotel is pretty good but the location is quite seedy, a sort of Times Square before Rudy came into office. There are so many better options and locations in Boston. Try something like the millenium near Faneuil hall or the Omni in the middle of the Freedom Trail.

The Swiss Hotel is not in an awful location. It also abuts Macy's. It's fairly well located, and its one of the more expensive hotels in Boston. The area is actually being rebeautified right now, but it will still take a couple of years. You're a couple of blocks from the Boston Common and about a 15 minute walk from the Quincy Market. For restaurants try Dakota's, McCormick & Schmidt, Fleming's Steakhouse and Legal Seafood. You're also very close to China Town, so I would recommend the Grand Chau Chau, which is probably the best restaurant in Chinatown, however, there is no ambiance. For dessert, go to Finale.

Stayed at the Swissotel over the weekend and was very pleased. It's four-star in every way. Great rooms, nice amenities and a good location. This neighorhood (Downtown Crossing) isn't Boston's best but it is improving almost daily. It's also VERY convenient to just about every other part of the city. We walked to the North End, South End, Copley/Back Bay, the Commons/Public Garden (one block away), etc. Easy access to all 4 subway lines, too.
All in all, I highly recommend the Swissotel.

I concur with John. We just stayed at the new Ritz Carlton at Boston Common, one block from the Swissotel, and noticed the VAST neighborhood improvements in the past few years. The shopping district (Macy's, Filene's, etc.) is still a tad rough around the edges but not unsafe.

We just returned from a weekend at the Swissotel in Boston ($85/night Priceline). We've been to Boston and stayed in various hotels many, many times, and the Swissotel is definitely one of the very nicest. Our room was very large, beautifully decorated (very new), with a very nice bathroom. Climate control was excellent (with a nifty button for the outdoor temperature). The public areas are gorgeous and well maintained. Service throughout the hotel was very friendly, helpful and efficient. Our dinner in Cafe Suisse was terrific, with wonderful service. The location IS a tad odd, between downtown crossing (pedestrian mall including Macy's and Filene's department stores) and Chinatown. But, it's only a short walk from the Boston Common. We walked back from Maison Robert on Saturday night without feeling the least bit uncomfortable. We did not find the neighborhood "scary" at all. They have a fabulous collection of literature and a wonderful Concierge. Except for Priceline, I would never have considered this hotel. But, we were very pleased and enjoyed our stay at Swissotel.
