Swine Flu
We can't decide whether to cancel our planned a trip to Cancun on May 29, 2009 at the Omni Hotel.
The CDC has lifted the Non Essential Travel Restriction to a Travel Precaution, however, the Mexican News reports 3000 cases of swine flu to date. We welcome any advise from a recent traveler or someone with information that can help us to make our decison to go or stay home? Thank you so much

I would not cancel, Cancun is a tourist area, not the area densly populated with the locals.
BUT having said that, we got another e-mail today from our headquarters reminding us not to travel to Mexico, and if somebody will go anyway, they will stay at home for 4 days to make sure the are not disease carriers.

The H1N1 flu (known in the tabloids as swine flu) garnered deserved attention from public health authorities because it was a previously unknown strain. In the face of that, caution (but not hysteria) is warranted. Unfortunately, caution does not sell papers but sensationalism does and many get their information from the media rather than from scientific sources. The CDC warning against nonessential travel to Mexico was lifted as of May 15 with common sense precautions sill advised. See http://tinyurl.com/ohhglh

Thank you all for your replies...really appreciate it. My husband wants to go and I am leary. Maybe should wear a mask and latex gloves just in case. Just kidding...but thank you all for your time and response. If we go we'll make sure to post.

The one thing I would recommend is hand sanitizer. A mask will not prevent you from getting any virus, though if you are sick it will certainly help you from infecting others. However, the way you're going to get sick is to touch your eyes or mouth after touching a surface where virus is still present. Wash your hands before eating, try not to touch your face unnecessarily, and use hand sanitizer whenever you can.

We just returned from a glorious trip to Playa del Carmen-flying in and out of Cancun. Not a mask was in sight. Many hotels closed due to lack of guests. Please don't confuse fear with the facts. Go on your trip and have a wonderful time.
