No! The return ferries don't run that late. Personally, I would call the restaurant to ask about taxis to the city. I actually wouldn't be surprised if San Francisco taxis were not allowed to come empty to Sausalito to pick up a fare.

LucieV - the front desk at the Hyatt did not know it either. I called them back - I was stranded at this look out place which is very popular but very scary that late at night - we were there for a few HOURS. I begged the desk in tears at this point (not kidding) and they found a cab from Sausalito but the cab would not go OVER the bridge to get back to where we were - we had to cross over in the dark, very scary - it was cold - and that night ds got a very high fever - he had had a slight cold as he just returned from a week with our church in Mexico building houses - and was pretty run down. I ended up renting a car and driving home the next day because he as too sick to fly. I took him to the Dr. the next day and he had Pneumonia. Could not make this up if I tried. Cell phone went dead...the whole bit.

It did not bode well with my fears...

See that... I needed my Fodors then!

It was one of the strangest travel experiences I have had..and I have been to Thailand, Europe... Mexico... to have it so close to home was weird. I had not heard of such a "law" and have no idea if to this day it was "real". But we could not get a cab to come and get us and the Hyatt had a hard time as well. It was mighty dark on that walk way to the other side of the freeway/bridge and then going through a vacant pitch black "park and ride" on the other side... scary. I told the Hyatt to get us a car... I would pay anything.
When I told dh the story - he was pretty livid at me for not just calling 911. I said it did not seem like an emergency..what would they do??

I would seriously have freaked out. I live in a lovely and safe suburb, and I still don't like to walk from the downtown area to home after dark alone (all of 3 blocks).

I am sure the sushi place in Sausalito is great, but why go all that way, there have to be some way more convenient to Union Sq. especially on such a short trip?

Lucie, "shmitzing" hmmm, I am not familiar with that term, where is my yiddish english guide when I need it? Oy...

I think we are going to stay in SF... I love Sausalito and hope dh and I get back there someday. We loved the Casa Madronna Inn... but think I will stay close like you said Deb (and others) --

The ferry lady told us the same thing - miss the ferry and you can't get back to SF until morning (no alternatives, including cabs). DF REALLY wanted to go to Sausalito, so we ate at Boulevard instead. Nice substitute though

MomDDTravel, what a terrible experience you had -- I'm glad you made it back to SF OK but am sorry your son so sick. I'm glad it didn't diminish your love of San Francisco!

momdd,
i think you may have had a problem with the taxi because you were at the lookout point. sounds like a horrifying experience.

there have been numerous times when i have taken a taxi home to sausalito late at night when i worked downtown s.f.
i have also taken one to the airport from sausalito but maybe that is different.

if you do end up coming to sushi ran and there is no ferry, i can always run you back to s.f.
it is literally not more than 20 mins away.

Sorry I can't help w/SF recommendations (I actually opened this thread in order to learn more about SF!), but I did want to comment on the under-age facial issue. It made me realize that if this is your stepdaughter, I'm guessing you're not her legal guardian? In which case, facial aside, I just want to remind you that you should take a signed medical consent from her parent/legal guardian in the event of medical emergency. You probably already knew that, but I figured it doesn't hurt to mention it.

And to the poster sf7307, I'm wondering if you could please post the sushi recommendations you were going to email privately? Unless there's something personal about them, in which case disregard this request, I think everyone would benefit from the info, and isn't that what this forum is for? Thanks.

Judy - thank you. Yes, it is my stepdaughter, but yes, I am fine with traveling solo with her. I have obtained medical treatment for her since she was 3 years old.

Abranz - you are so kind!

Judy, there is nothing private about them, so I will post it, but it's at work, so it'll be tomorrow.

MomDD, Judy is right. Even if you have traveled with her 1000 times, it will only take one doctor or hospital to refuse to treat her because you don't have decidsion-making authority.

Sf - I know she is right... I just wonder why I have taken her to the Dr. a billion times, she is on my insurance card and I have sought ER care for her in the past. Me, not dh. Her Mom does not take her to the Dr. much...at all..never has. It is mind boggling I know but not one person has ever asked me who I am...and if I have the "right" for her to treat her...

Well, I guess it's because you're on the same insurance card, and have the same last name? Noone has ever asked if I'm the mother of my children either -- why would they?
