Maybe I should answer my own question! LOL

Funny you both have said Hawaii. That is my goal. I lived there for 10 yrs. when I went to college and have every intention to move back.

Why? Cuz it just doen't get any better than that

What do you mean by warm?

I don't call 60 degrees in February warm but someone who lives in Maine might call that warm.

I would love to know why Honolulu, and not places on other islands. Is it because the "city" part of Honolulu makes the other places too inconvenient? I think its something like 80 percent of Hawaii residents live on Oahu, so I'm very curious about it. I like to dream of my retirement in Hawaii. Is it more "livable", economical, better work opportunities, etc. I have heard that for serious medical emergencies, only Honolulu has a big enough hospital, don't know if that's true or not. Thanks for any advice.

HT- You are so cute!!! Tell Mrs HT I say she's one lucky woman!

I like Honolulu because of all the reasons above--- the jobs, shopping, dining, entertainment, and medical. Great (and varied) beaches, lots of cultural activities and a growing arts culture. Relatively safe. Friendly people and good weather. Competitive air routes so fairly cheap and easy to vacation on the mainland or in Asia.
Casual dress all week long, and rubbah slippas (flip flops) okay everywhere.
no need for heating or AC if your home is aligned properly.

It is basically a wonderful small city with lots of beautiful country surrounding it. Cost of living is high, but this is balanced by the quality of life.

All of the above aaaaaaannd if you need a break from it all, Maui, Kauai, the Big Island, Molokai and Lanai are just 15 to 40 minutes away.

Aloha!

Hawaii gets my vote too! I guess my current location in Southern California isn't the right kind of warm...no tradewinds! We hope to retire there, not sure which island. Thanks to Kal we have ruled out Kauai!

I have heard all the wonderful things about Hawaii, and I am inclined to believe it all..but I keep hearing about the "bed bugs" that may send you to the hospital and kill many children per year...is this a real concern? (I ask as a parent who wants to move there)

Thanks for any input.

I probably answered Hawaii, too. However, after my last vacation there, looking at some property and ending up getting sick and visiting the ER, I rescind my prior vote.

It's a great place to visit. Even for an extended time or for long retirement visits. However, I would never pull up roots and move there.
Bad infrastructure, unbelieveable cost of housing, more insects than you can shake a stick at, poor schools, ineffective government and poor enforcement of regulations.

Make sure you spend some time on a visit, not a vacation before making any decisions to move.

Huh?

I'm not trying to be rude (really) - but is this a serious question, or is this a tongue in cheek jest, kind of like what some posters have going about Kauai being a terrible place to visit?

I sure never heard of any fatal bed bug bites, nor any other fatalities from other wild animals in Hawaii; except the very rare shark bite.

No snakes, no rabies either.

I get an occasional gekko or cockroach, but we're talking once or twice a year, and my central vaccuum takes care of them quickly!

Hawaii would be at the bottom of our list because we like doing long road trips with our dog.

Although we're not warm weather people, we might consider a place like Daniel Island, SC, but only if we had someplace cooler to go to from July 1through September 30.

Although we like the ocean, we're pool swimmers, so we'd like a community that has several big pools, as well as walking and bike trails.
