Surprise Birthday for my Husband in Boston!

I am taking my Husband to Boston for his birthday. We live in Virginia. Any suggestions for any romantic spots/resturants? How about any good bars or clubs. We are staying right beside Fenway Park?

If you like jazz, the best clubs in the city are the Regattabar at the Charles Hotel in Harvard Square, and Scullers at the Doubletree Guest Suites. Very nice jazz clubs with well-known and occasionally local performers.

I'm not much on the nightclub scene, but if you enjoy it, most of the best known in Boston are on Lansdown Street right near Fenway. However, you don't say how old you are, and these will probably attract quite a young crowd.

I can't think of any romantic restaurants in the Fenway area (it's primarily a student area), but Boston is easy to get around by public transportation, so I certainly wouldn't limit yourself to that area. Not too far from the Fenway is The Elephant Walk on Beacon Street. Very good cambodian and french food. Pretty expensive and nice, but not overly romantic.

One of our favorite romantic spots is the downstairs cafe at Maison Robert which is downtown. I think it's called Ben's. Not many people seem to know about it, so it's not overly crowded. The cafe has the feel of eating in a refurbished wine cellar. The food is french and very good and the service is excellent. It's a little pricey, but less so than the main restaurant upstairs.

Have a great time in Boston, and feel free to ask any other questions.

Do not miss the bar at the Ritz Carlton right next to Boston Commons. The service is excellent and you could make a meal out of those wonderful nuts.

If you go to the Ritz-Carlton bar, your husband may need a tie. A few years ago, they wouldn't let the mayor stay without one! This may have changed since then.

We enjoy a stroll through the North End, the sights and smells of about 50 Italian restaurants. It is fun to walk until the right one "calls your name". Have eaten in many, never had a bad meal. Prefer Picola Venezia, and Lucias.

If it is warm weather when you get here, try any of the outdoor cafes/restaurants at quincy market. Harbor dinner boat rides are available in the summer, maybe sooner.

Boston's most romantic restaurants tend to be the ones in the hotels: the Dining Room at the Ritz Carlton, Adjourhui at the Four Seasons, and the Julien at the Meridien. Hot dining spots like Olive's tend to be very crowded with elbows flying.

If your plans include being in Boston on Sunday, let me strongly recommend brunch at either the Meridien (Cafe Fleuri) or the Ritz-Carlton (and yes, the latter does require a coat and tie).

Agree that the restaurants at Le Meridien are great, in fact I'm staying there this weekend, and intend to check out the Sunday buffet. The North End is famous for Italian, and I love Mama Maria (disregard the name), which I think is romantic (even though my teen will accompany me on Saturday). I also eat lobster in the library of the Hampshire House just off the Common, and an old favorite for French, Madame DuBarry on Newbury street. Enjoy.

As you've probably already figured out, right by the Fenway isn't the most romantic spot. But you should have little trouble getting to other parts of the city by foot, T, or taxi.

If you like jazz, the Regattabar is definitely a good place. And Rialto, the restaurant also in the Charles Hotel is very nice and quite romantic. In fact, I once took my husband to the Charles for his birthday, and we barely left. Dinner at Rialto, after dinner at Regattabar, and Sunday brunch at Henrietta's table (the more casual restaurant also in the hotel). It was all outstanding.

If price were no object, I think one of the city's most romantic restaurants is L'Espalier, a french restaurant in a back bay townhouse. It has several dining rooms in different rooms, all of them quite small and charming.

I was in Boston last week and had a blast! I stayed near Fenway too (but in a hostel)
A fun bar was on Boylston Street at Exeter - the Samuel Adams bar. Get a Sam Adams sampler (four different brews) for $5. You can walk there from Fenway.
There are fun restaurants on Newbury Street (also walkable as long as the weather is nice).

The new edition of "Romantic Days and Nights in Boston" is in the bookstores. Dozens of wonderful ideas.
