Sunday afternoon in Newark?!
Sunday afternoon in Newark?!
I am a NJ Native, but I haven't been back to Newark/Down Neck in over 25 years.
I am spending the weekend in NYC with a friend (Hotel near WTC). She wants to go to Brooklyn to explore old school Jewish Delis, Italian Bakeries, and authentic ethnic food stores. She is also passionate about Choral music and church organs.
I noticed that the Newark Basilica has a concert next Sunday afternoon. I think she would love it.
Tell me... What is Newark like these days? Would it be safe and enjoyable to stroll on Ferry street for a custard cup and coffee? Then take a LYFT to the Basilica for the concert? Maybe return to Ironbound for an authentic dinner (Spanish Tavern?)? I appreciate your thoughts and feedback!

Visiting Newark on a Sunday
Newark has changed a lot in 25 years. I think it would be fine to do what you are planning. The Ferry Street area, which is below Penn Station, is a vibrant and hustle/bustle type of area. (Or at least it was; I haven't been down there since pre-Covid.) The CBD of Newark is much more populated and busy during the work week (again, pre-Covid). So IMO, your plan sounds just fine. You could also check out the Grammy Museum located in the Prudential Center (The Rock) on Mulberry Street, a short walk from Penn Station. Lots of wonderful restaurants in the Ironbound Hope you have a fun time!

As in most cities, there are areas to avoid. I have no qualms about being in the Ironbound/Down Neck area of Newark. When attending a concert at the NJPAC, the Prudential Center, etc., there are large crowds and a police presence. It is always good to ask questions about unfamiliar areas, but I would not be afraid to go into the Ironbound/Down Neck area, or to attend concerts at any of the venues in Newark.
