The Sun Road, also more properly known as the Going to the Sun Road or Highway, goes right over the main part of Glacier National Park via Logan Pass. It goes from St. Mary on the east side of the park to West Glacier on the west side. From the east, one can come in via Cut Bank and Browing to St. Mary. From the west, one comes in via Kalispell or Whitefish to West Glacier. US 2 goes around the southern boundary of the park, so that emphatically is NOT the Sun Road.
It is one of the more scenic drives that you will ever take. It ranks right up there with Tioga Pass in Yosemite, the Million Dollar Highway from Ouray to Durango, the Beartooth Highway in Montana, and Trail Ridge Road in Rocky Mountain National Park.
I don't know a route number. I looked at my Montana map and I don't see any numbers associated with the road. But the route is not one that is easy to miss.

Going to the Sun is absolutely a beautiful road. However if it should be raining I would not travel it that day. The road can be narrow in places, and you have to concentrate even more if it is raining. Check with your local AAA, because they have a Montana Tour book and they will also map out a route - which I'm sure you could do yourself.
