Just thought I would report on the experience. We, (Of COURSE), traveled during the record breaking heat wave that went through the end of June first week of July. Bugs were not a problem at all, probably too hot for them. But the heat and humidity finally took their toll on me.
We camped (with a tent) at Lake McConaughy in Nebraska. I didn't get much sleep, due to heat or humidity or stress I don't know.
We camped at the city park in Winterset Iowa, though a little too muggy and it rained abit I enjoyed our night there. I saw fireflies and that was wonderful.
Then the next time we camped was near Harmony MN (actually in Iowa on the upper Iowa river). By this time the heat was so intense and we'd been dealing with it so long I really questioned this, but I'm glad we were there, it was a beautiful spot. I want to come back and canoe the river.
By the time we got to South Dakota the heat wave was passing and the cooler temps made for a great camp experience.
I loved the Midwest. I've driven through several times, but this was the first more indepth visit and it was a resounding success.
