Hi,
I came from India to USA and found the National Parks awesome. You may want to take your friend to a few.
If I had the kind of time you say you do, I would have gone for a cross country road trip. You can do a cross country with less than 6 weeks in hand. I know friends who did that before leaving USA. (We plan to make a cross country trip next year.)
Among the cities - I would think NYC will be priority. DC - for the memorials and museums etc. Virginia, West Virginia... North Carolina have lovely drives and they are "almost heaven". Many people outside USA hear a lot about Vegas too... but it really depends on what your friend enjoys more. Consider Niagra Falls too. Someone mentioned historic New England - I agree. I haven't been to SF area yet... so I wouldn't know. I have heard a lot about it though and it is supposed to be very interesting. Why don't you pick up some books/magazines at a book store/library and get some idea about cross country routes. I think if you are both up for the driving, it is the best way to see the most of America!

How exciting for you!! Please let us know where you wound up going and give us a trip report. My hope is you don't dismiss the south because of the weather, especially if he wants to go to New Orleans, but no matter where you go please include the Grand Canyon and Vegas, such a contrast!
