Suggestion for Luau in Maui or Big Isle

I know that the PCC is supposed to have the best Luau in Hawaii, but as im reviewing my schedule for the cruise we have planned in feb. Our ship leave Oahu on a sat and that is the day our flight gets in, so the only way we will be able to go to the show is if we are not to jet lag. Then we set sail for the other islands. Our return to Oahu will be on the following saturday, but also will be our flight. I just dont think the Luau will be possible that day, but a Luau is something that i absolutely want to attend, and am looking forward to. Can someone recomend another one on another island? We will spend 2 full consecutive days on Kauai, Maui, and both sides of the big isle. Oahu is broken down into the two days that we arrive and leave. Thanks...

We went to a great Luau in Kona, HI the big island at the Kona Coast Resort. They made a big show out of digging up the pig and turkeys they cooked in the ground. It was great!

I absolutely loved the Old Lahaina Luau and have heard *it* called the best luau in Hawaii by many people.

Pacific Cultural Center is extremely commercial, not to mention Mormon sponsored so would never be my choice regardless of schedule.

I want to see a Luau that uses fire.. does the old lahaina luau incorporate fire into there show, not just to cook with... im leaning towards that one..

We went to the Old Lahania Luau and would recommend it. I think the "blue book" said it was the best one in Hawaii.

brittany, fire is a polynesian thing, not hawaiian (is my understanding). i don't think it was a part of the Old Lahaina show for that reason.

suze - All of the dancing is Polynesian in every luau. That includes, Maori dancing (New Zealand), Samoa dancing and fire knife dancing, Tahitian dance, etc.

Are you sure that Old Lahaina Luau does not have fire knife dancing? It is usually the highlight of any luau.

Brittany - www.oldlahainaluau.com is their website. There are 800 numbers listed on their website or 'contact me' e-mail on their site so you can ask questions.

We went to the Old Lahaina Luau in December last year. It definitely does NOT have the fire dancers. That being said we enjoyed it very much, but I do think it runs a little longer than the others.

The fire knife dance is Samoan. OLL prides itself on the fact that their entertainment is strictly Hawaiian hula. They follow the history of the islands and the history of hula, from kahiko (tradtional) to `auana (modern). They end the program with a Tahitian hula, allowing individual dancers to showcase their talents, but the actual show is all Hawaiian. As far as I know, all of the other lu`aus have Polynesian reviews, incorporating dances of many of the Polynesian cultures, of which the Hawaiian culture is just one.

Here today - Where do you think the Polynesians came from?

All Polynesian dancing came form the places I mentioned and more.

The so-called "pure Hawaiian" dancing is derived from the other places. There is nothing "pure" about it.

Do they have poi balls? Slap dancing? Tongan drums?

If not, then it sure isn't the bext luau on Maui!

Dusty--to paraphrase, get thyself to a kumu hula. Although all of the isalnd groups in the Pacific are part of "Poynesia," each has developed their own unique culture and hula. Hawai`i was isolated from the island groups for several hundred years, during which time they developed what is known as kahiko hula and chant. Post-contact, kahiko was outlawed and eventually `auana was born. While is may have it's roots in other forms, it is uniquely Hawaiian.

By your reasoning, we'd have to say that today's hip-hop is just African tribal music, since it evolved from African roots, which led to American Jazz, soul, R&B and modern gospel. Or that country and western music is only traditional celtic music, since that was an early influence to bluegrass.

brittany21 - the Feast at LeLe in Lahaina is also run by the people who do the Old Lahaina Luau. It has Hawaiian, New Zealand (Maori), Tahitian and Samoan dancing, which means you'll get your fire knife dancing. Go to: http://www.feastatlele.com/ and you can watch a short video of the show.

And Dusty - you're way off base on this one. The word luau is Hawaiian. And while there are definitely feasts of some kind throughout Polynesia, since you want to split hairs, a real "luau" would only have Hawaiian entertainment. And of course I know that most of the luaus have a variety of cultures participating...
But actually, the Old Lahaina Luau is definitely the best...luau.

I am not going to split hairs. I am not talking about whether or not a "luau" is Hawaiian. I have been a Hawaii resident long enough to know what a luau is. My ex-wife was a Polynesian dancer. My daughter was a Polynesian dancer. My granddaughter is learning to be a Polynesian dancer.

It is the entertainment, i.e., the dancing comes from that I am speaking of. The dances at any luau are all derived from all of the Polynesian nations.

Actually Dusty, I just thought you were coming down a bit hard on Here_today, and she's probably lived in Hawaii longer than both of us put together. To ask her, "Where do you think the Polynesians came from?" was a bit arrogant, I thought. Sorry, I didn't mean to get your hackles up (again), it's just that to pronounce judgement on a luau without seeing it...well...

And don't worry about the debate, brittany21, we're all used to it.

I agree. Brittany, no need to apologize about the "debate". Debates are fun!

You'll have a good time at any luau you go to. They are all good entertainment.

Dusty, I take it you have never seen the show? No, there was no fire knife dancing included in the Old Lahaina Luau... which was absolutely wonderful BTW.
