SugarHill Inn/Franconia,NH/Comments?

My husband and I just decided we should go North and view the foliage. Not an easy task. After trying for two days and several hours I just secured a two nights reservation at the Sugar Hill Inn, in Franconia, NH. I know nothing about the Inn or the area. Any comments or suggestions would be greatly appreciated with regard to either would be so appreciated. Any suggestions on what to see and also on the INN iself? How is the food, location, etc.

Thank you for any info! Home 1

You have picked an awesome area to stay at, I just love New Hampshire. I have not been out that way for a long time but it is great. Sorry I can't give any more specific information but may I suggest posting your question on the hosted forum - New England. I am sure the hosts will know the area really well.

I haven't stayed at the Sugar Hill Inn, but have been at the nearby Franconia Inn many times over the last 20 years or so. It's the best part of New Hampshire, IMHO.

Weather (and your physical condition) permitting, consider hiking some of the many beautiful trails in the area. For those with lots of stamina, the classic loop is on the east side of Franconia Notch, up Falling Waters Trail, across the ridge to Mt. Lafayette, and down the Bridle Path. A much easier hike is on the west side of the notch up to Lonesome Lake. Both have beautiful views of the foliage. There are many, many other alternatives and maps and guidebooks are available locally.

If you're not into hiking, you can achieve much the same thing by riding up the Cannon Mountain Tram (cable car). If you do that, be sure to take the short trail from the summit house to the view south down the Notch. I like to take a picnic lunch and rock hop down off the trail a few hundred feet to enjoy the view with (relative) solitude.

Two natural features of interest are the Flume and the Basin. The Flume is a rock gorge with a river at the bottom that you can traverse on a boardwalk. There's a small fee charged. The Basin is a huge glacial pothole - no admission fee.

If you'd like a nice drive, consider heading east over Routes 3 and 302 to Bretton Woods, where you can have a drink on the veranda of the recently restored Mt. Washington Hotel - the views of Mt Washington and the Presidential Range from there are truly breathtaking. You could then continue south through Crawford Notch to North Conway with its numerous outlet shops (and traffic), thence back to Franconia Notch over the wild and unspoiled Kancamagus Highway, making a nice one-day leef-peeping loop.

Sigar Hill is a sweet, charming, old-fashioned, comfortable place. Extremely appealing. Enjoy the area-- and returning to your lodging.

Sorry for the typo. Nothing to do with cigars or sigars; I meant "Sugar."
