Stranded in Kona, Hawaii!!!

Desperately need rental car in Kona Dec 26! Called all national chains none available. Does anyone know of a local outfit or an alternative? I know I should have done this 6 months ago, but just added Big Island to itinerary. Help and Thanks! Andrea

Andrea-Would you consider hitchiking? I lived on the big island this past winter(incredible experience) and hitching is relatively safe and a often used option to sightsee the island. I did it by myself and toured around the entire island and experienced no problems and met a bunch of neat and down to earth locals as well as tourists. My friends there swear by it and the Big Island is known for its hospitality compared to the other islands.
If your not into that I suggest getting the local rental car numbers-more often than not there are more cars available that the national numbers don't know about. Also, mention you are looking for "ka'amina" rates-pronounced ka-ma-ania, its a hawaiian word for local, and if they think your a local they usually give you a better rate and hold cars aside for this reason!
Good Luck-Any questions about the Big Island, email me!
Aloha

Recently rented a 4WD from Harper's Car Rental, a local company near Hilo International Airport. Nice car, a bit pricey. The good thing is you can take their 4WDs all the way up Saddle Road to the summit of Mauna Kea and see the observatories. Anyway, here's their number: 808/969-1478. Good luck!

If you go all the way up to the summit (14,000+ feet), make sure you stop and acclimate at the Visitor's Center first otherwise you could have serious health problems.

Thanks Heather and Janice for your helpful answers. As for hitchhiking, I have a husband and two young sons. Were I young and single it would be a great idea if as safe as you say. The bureau of tourism gave me Harper's number after I posted. They only have a pickup with extended cab available ($101 per day). It's not me at all but, I took it and would still prefer something much smaller if anyone has an idea. Heather and Janice you both were a great to answer! Thanks, Andrea

Andrea,
You might be able to do better upon arrival, many local rental agencies there, also, try the national agencies when you get into the Airport, may have availability at that time.
Bad idea to ask for "Ka'amina" rate, they always request proof.
Our daughter lives in Hawaii and we use it at Hotels etc. but she must be with us and show her I.D.
Have a wonderful time!
