Searching for a nice place to get off Route 495 for lunch while driving from the Berkshires to Portland, ME. Can anyone help?

The Grog is the usual recommendation made to visitors - decent pub-style food in semi-authentic setting. But there are also any number of cute little places along the main street.
If you have time, spend a little of it walking around looking at the little shops - one of the few places around that has not been over-taken by chain store invasion. Street parking is limited, but there are a number of pay lots close by that will not cost a fortune.

I agree about Newburyport! I like the 10 Centre St pub for lunch, and they have free parking for customers. I used to also like the Kiwi Grill, but I think it's closed. You will have to go about 10 minutes south on Rt. 95 and a ten minute drive to the port section, though.
The same idea (shops/restaurants) is also present in Portsmouth, NH, which has much easier on/off access to the downtown. However, at this point you are only about an hour out of Portland, ME, so it may be a bit late for lunch.
You may want to stop a bit earlier in Andover, MA (the Rt. 28 exit off Rt 495). There are quite a few pleasant places there, as well.

tsarina, Here are my Newburyport suggestions (I love a view!) -
The Black Cow Tap & Grill is right on the water and is fun, on the trendy side. It's popular and only open for lunch on weekends.
Michaels Harborside is also on the water - also quite popular.
Starboard Galley is another with water views, basic but good (they get busy, but it seems easier to get a seat).
The three I mentioned have their own parking lots. If you want to walk around the town, you can move your car to the municipal lot (it's free). Grab an ice cream at Gram's and walk the boardwalk.

IF you want to go a bit further north (50 minutes south of Portland) pull into Portsmouth, NH. The Stockpot has a great little deck overlooking the river. A bit north at the Kittery Outlets is a new place called Roberts Grill. Very good....I live 2 miles from there. Bobs Clam Hut is another good quick stop and you could browse next door at the Kittery Trading post. Just some thoughts

It does take a few minutes to get off in Newburyport or Portsmouth to park - (although they are both worthwhile stops).
If you are really pressed for time, the exit for N. Andover/Lawrence - Rt. 114 has a great Chinese restaurant, Lee Chen. If you go in the direction of N. Andover, it is right off the exit. If you prefer Indian food, another good place is the Bollywood Grill, just a few yards past (going towards N. Andover) in the North Andover Mall (it's a small strip mall with a Kohls).

tracey2cents - I can only handle the quarter kiddie at Hodgies. Haven't worked up to the half kiddie yet. Ever see anyone unknowingly order a large?
Newburyport is a great suggestion. Glens Galley is also good. But if you want the best fried clams around and to get a taste of the local scene check out the Park Lunch.

If you are going to do the North Andover/Lawrence idea - there are 2 exits for Route 114. One says Rte 114 west/Lawrence. That is the wrong one. The other says Route 114E/Middleton - that is the correct one.
About 1/10 mile up on left is Lee Chen, next to the 7-11 and Friendly's that got flooded out in the May floods and are closed. If you go to Lee Chens, make sure they give you the free fried wonton wrapper type things with a sweet dipping sauce before lunch. About another 2/10 mile on left is North Andover Mall where Bollywood Grill is - it is on the far right end of mall.
While you are at it, there is a Gulf gas station on the opposite side of the street that has the least expensive gas around. Do not get gas at the Mobil station - it is 10 cents higher.
