Now we get to the heart of it. Someone hurt you and now you displace your anger on everyone that looks different than you. I also just read what you were saying about Asians loitering in front of stores and calling you names on another post- I'm sure they do that to others too, believe me, you're not that special. We all have our sad stories and have been wronged in one way or another. We can't stereotype people as a result, or try not to anyway which is hard. I haven't been to the places you named (I have been overseas, just not to the UK), so I can't comment on them, but if they are dangerous and happen to be predominantly black I would avoid them as much as I would avoid some places in other parts of the US, but not because there are blacks there but because it's risky. I'd avoid a risky place whether there were whites, hispanics, or any other nationality there because I value my life, which I'm sure you do too because that's what led you to asking the question in the first place, right. I have no interest in going to war-torn countries in Europe or Africa or South America at this time, but I am interested in going to beautiful cities with caring locals whether they look like me or not. And I wouldn't assume walking through Coventry that just by showing my black face I'd be ok, as you say. I can't stereotype and think that all whites are out to do me harm (you're not out to hurt me right, Tony?) just as all blacks aren't out to do you harm.

And by the way, Z, I certainly am not a friend of Tony's, and as I said, I do avoid risky places, whether they be Compton or your backyard no matter what the skin color. Don't be stupid.

Well, tcc, you may have a point. I'll just bow out at this point and leave the harrangue about Compton, skin color and safety to you brainy types. But I'll continue to monitor, and maybe be able to keep up. Daunting task to be sure.

Z-

I know it's daunting so don't hurt yourself.

I've said my piece, just as everyone else has, so I'm done.

Hope everyone has a good trip whenever and wherever they're going- this IS a travel forum, right?

If you are an angry white male in 98% white Scotland, you'll never make it in the U.S. buddy. California, for example, is now the minority-majority state, with Hispanics, Asians and African-Americans comprising more than 50% of the population. Now, if you can't control your rage about that sort of thing any better than you can on this forum, you might want to rethink your trip. It'll just be one big "Third World" aggravation for you, and your racist commentary won't endear many book publishers.

You're in the realms of fantasy now!

Control my rage? I was ticked off for posting too many times. I've not shouted/hit anyone or got upset either.

nomatter what I say you will try to put some sort of spin on it. For example, a fraction of my monthly salary goes to a charity to help a particular type of blindness in young Africans. The one where the eyelashes grow in the way. It really is horrible.

Now am I a decent sort of guy for doing this or am I a bad guy for only giving a small amount when I could easily give more? Am I a racist who is trying to ease his conscience by doing this or am I patronising black people by giving them charity? You could spin that one at least four ways.

If thats the best you could do then get well soon.

See you in California!

Tony: When you finally do make it to Southern California, I suggest you confine your visit to the city of Simi Valley. You'll fit right in.

Tony- There is a small class of Americans whose goal in life is to exist in a continual state of outrage. This conveniently allows them to demonstrate their unselfish goodness. It's easier to accuse your neighbor of being a bigot than examining your own beliefs and attitudes. If there are fifty ways to interpret a statement, the outraged people will always choose the most offensive possibility.

The outraged tend to view others as idiots; the only exceptions being other members of the outraged class and persons perceived as victims (with whom they sympathize, but never physically associate, with). They often have advanced degrees, but menial poor-paying jobs. Fortunately, the outraged people tend to marginalize themselves by associating only with like-minded people, so it is unlikely you will encounter any of them on your American travels.

Deaest Repub.:

I'm outraged that you find it so easy to generalize; moreover, you're an idiot. In fact, I think I'll meet Tony at the airport.

Republican, your name fits your diatribe. That is indeed an accurate description of the voters within the Republican Party.

Tony, I feel sorry for you man. The world is getting blacker and browner by the minute and you'll just be more pissed off.

The one thing that sticks out to me is that Tony cannot accept ANY CRITICISM even when it is offered in a courteous and helpful manner. Granted, some of the posters have been less than polite, but Tony has responded to any criticism with disdain.

Au contraire Andy.

I've taken a lot of flak on 2 postings in the last couple of days. I'll argue my case, why shouldn't I? I'm not trying to keep a posting going or whatever but if someone is calling me a racist then I'll reply to that.

We are born neither racists nor politically correct, it's indoctrined. I like to think I'm neither.

Sorry Z,

I am real. My e-mail address is real. I was not invented. And you include me twice in your list of Tony's make believe friends. I was the one "extolling" Tony's posting method. YOU are the angry one. So sad.

Sorry, JWagner - so you're not one of Tony's friends? But you admit to extolling his multi-posting methods? Okay, I was at least halfway right. Mad I'm not, but I do believe Tony monopolizes this site. I AM thus concerned about the future, and what Fodor's might do to counteract all this back and forth BS over what is a minor contrivance. Just one request for the future: IF anyone actually ever lays eyes on Tony on US soil, post to Fodor's right away. Lets at least confirm that he travels. Personally I think it's all make believe anyway, and that Tony just creates situations to gain some attention (congratulations to Tony, it worked!). He never goes anywhere probably.

I'd rather see Tony's travel questions on here than the political threads and 3 stooges threads which have no business here!

Z, what the heck are you doing, pal? First, you question the bona fides of several people on this thread, speculating that they are really Tony. Well, JWagner, Christina and TCC are people I have seen on this board many times. If you visited a lot, you'd know that. So that makes me question whether you've really been around enough to have any idea of whether Tony is monopolizing the board (assuming that is even possible). From what I've seen over the last year, he comes and goes, posting a lot in stretches and never posting at all in stretches. So the natural question is, So What's Your Point? Or would you rather just take it all back and forget the whole thing?

Z,

Another correction. I said I wasn't one of Tony's MAKE BELIEVE friends. I believe I will see Tony in April when he passes through Iowa. I'll let you know if he really does travel. Boy, you are sure a skeptic, aren't you?

Tony:

Don't worry. There are a few sane people left in this world. There was absolutely nothing wrong with your post regarding Compton. There are people in this world who want to stick their head in the sand and ignore the facts regarding the high levels of crime in the black community - gangs, shootings, robberies, etc. You see, it's easier to deny the facts than to face up to the problem and come up with a solution. Anyhow, you couldn't pay me to drive through Compton. Be careful and have a safe trip.

Wow, let the guy post what he wants and if you don't want to read it, DON'T!!!
Everyone who is complaining remember this...THIS IS A TRAVEL WEBSITE. For someone not from the US, these are all very valid questions. I have traveled the world over many times and I too have asked as many questions concerning Australia, Thailand, France, etc. CHILL OUT PEOPLE. I don't think he was rude. It is a well known fact that certain area of certain cities are "tougher" than others and can be dangerous. I don't think he is a bigot for asking that question...I think he is smart. And yes, Tony, as a black woman from LA area...Compton is tough and especially so if you make it obvious you are an outsider. Good luck in your travels.

Tony: Am expecting to see a few photos of you during your American experience. Hope you'll have a site to show some.
