Steak House in San Francisco

Hello!

I will be travelling to San Francisco shortly and would like to treat the BF to the best mid-west steak that I can. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

Old fashioned and excellent steaks -- Harris's at Van Ness and Pacific.

Morton's--excellent, but expensive.

Bob's Steak & Chop House in the Omni Hotel - excellent

Alfreds - not the worlds best steaks but a classic old school atmosphere

House of Prime Rib - just prime rib but oooohhhh so good.

If it's steaks you want then Harris' is the place. Unlike a lot of steak houses, the side dishes and non-beef dishes also are first-class. In addition to steaks, I've eaten lamb chops and salmon there and have been very happy with the meal.

For another carnivorous adventure, try a Brazilian-style churrascaria called Espetus. Go hungry.

Thanks for all the tips! I'm thinking of Harris' or House of Prime Rib. And thanks for the Brazilian steakhouse tip! That looks good - I'd like to try it too if we get a chance.

I have a question about those Brazilian churrascaria places.

Usually people mention not to fill up on the first stuff they bring you which is cheaper. So do you have to sit there and keep refusing any meat and wait for them to finally bring the "good stuff"? Or do you say, "we dont' want a tremendous amount of meat, can you bring us the really good cuts?" Or is that considered "tacky"? I keep avoiding these places for that reason. Why pay a huge price, fill up on mediocre stuff, then not be able to enjoy some really good beef?

Hi NeoPatrick,
No, you don't have to fill up on chicken livers and the like. You can't "order" the filet mignon per se, but what you do is just gesture "no" to the stuff you see arriving that is not to your pleasure. You will usually have a token on your table that flips green/red for go/stop. Make sure it is turned to green or the servers will stop coming around.

Alfred's is the quintessential San Francisco steak house.
