Staying near in Chicago
Planning to go to Chicago and downtown seems to be very booked or too pricey this weekend. Looking to find best area to stay where we can catch the train into downtown...or a safe place we can park and take the train, if we end up too far out.

The Carlton hotel in Oak Park is next to a train stop practically. RT on the EL is $4.50 and takes about 25 minutes. You could see the Frank Lloyd Wright houses while you are there.
Have you checked www.hotwire.com or tried to bid on priceline? see the winning bids at www.betterbidding.com.

There are three large conventions in town with a combined attendance of around 30,000.
If you can't find anything on the bidding sites, you can also try the Evanston/Skokie area. It's about an hour north of downtown via the Red, Purple or Yellow Line trains. There's a Hilton Garden Inn and Hilton in downtown Evanston and a Hampton, Doubletree, Extended Stay America in Skokie near Old Orchard shopping center.
Another option would be the area around O'Hare. There are several hotels and you could take the Blue Line downtown in about 45-60 minutes.
Have you considered B&Bs? There's one in the Rogers Park neighorhood which is 9 miles north of downtown called Cat's Cradle. It's showing availability for between $140 and $180. It's about two blocks from the Red Line and the Number 147 bus runs past the house.
If you'll be relying on public transit, passes may be a good investment. A 1-day pass is $5.75 and a 3-day is $14. They allow unlimited rides on all CTA trains and buses and are available at most CVS, Walgreens, Jewel and Dominick's stores throughout the city. For transit maps, schedules and how to track buses and trains, check www.transitchicago.com.

Check to see if the hostel has a room. http://www.hichicago.org/
You would still want to come into the city by rail. The hostel is right next to the "El".
