St. Louis Hampton Inn question
We are staying at the Hampton Inn at the Arch May 16,17. I have seen a map and the Landing, Arch and Riverboat Tours look like you could walk to them. Is that the case? If not, is there parking and is it easy to get to? Would it be a safe walk at night?

You can easily walk to the Arch, Landing and riverfront from there. Safe is a relative term. Many people in the StL metro area will tell you it is definitely not safe. Most of those same people are scared to death of the city and have no idea what it's really like. Thousands of people go to bars and restaurants on the Landing and on Washington Avenue at all hours and have no problems. But you should certainly keep your wits about you, don't walk anywhere unless there are a lot of people around, act like you know where you're going. Just use the same precautions you would in any city. One rule worth remembering: never go north of Delmar.
I've walked around at night many times downtown, including the Landing. I have had my car broken into once at a parking lot near the Arch. Other than that, the only trouble I've experienced is drunken, annoying, puking frat boys on the Landing. But that's not usually until the wee hours of the morn.
The Arch grounds close at dark. There is a casino on the Landing. It's rather seedy, but it does keep a lot of people milling about the area. So, you will be just fine.

Everything you listed is within walking distance.
The parking garage is part of the building.
Erica is right; there are plenty of people who think that if you travel inside the 270 loop you will automatically be mugged, stabbed or worse. I got downtown all the time and have never had any trouble. Just use common sense like in any city.
The arch grounds close at dark and since 9/11 they have had a fence running around the whole thing. There are also tons of Park Rangers in carts and HumVees hanging out.
To all visiting St. Louis and going to the Landing for drinking: never, ever urinate in the Arch parking garage. It's Federal property and thus a big deal. I don't speak from personal experience but have had friends that have gotten in trouble.

I live in St. Louis and work downtown and have never had any safety problems, especially in the areas you are interested in going to. As with any city, practicing some caution should be enough. There will be people milling around the Landing area all the time. Downtown does get a little empty and quite at night, once the offices shut down, but you should be fine. The Arch grounds should be safe although I would be cautious and stay on the sidewalks where there is lighting. St. Louis sometimes gets a bad rep but if you know where to avoid you should encounter no problems. Definitely avoid anything north of Delmar, as EricaS mentioned. You will know the "bad areas" when you see them.

I've walked that area many times at all different times of day. Very doable. That highway you may have seen on the map between the hotel and the riverfront is sunken Ground level bridges cross from the city to the arch grounds at each intersection, along with sidewalks and "walk" signals. At the Washington Ave crossing, the ramps will be above your head. It'll be easy.
