St. John the Divine Concert for Peace New Year's Eve in NYC

I am so thrilled that several Fodorites are intersted in coming to the concert this year at St. John's on New Years Eve.

Just an update on the concert. I get a total of 10 tickets, but might be able to get a few more if anyone else is intersted in attending.

The Concert is hosted by Harry Smith of CBS, and this year our guest is Lauren Flannigan from the Metropolitan Opera, (I could sit and listen to her for hours). There is a full orchestra (Manhattan School of Music), and 150 member chorus (I'll be the REDHEAD in the soprano section). We are doing 3 or 4 pieces this year one is by Vaughn Williams but don't know the other selections yet, but we start rehearsals on Saturday evening so will update this post when I know.

If you are still interested in coming please let me know and how many tickets you will need so I can keep an updated tally.

The concert starts at 7 or 7:30pm and we are usually done by 9 or so, so lots more time to enjoy the evening. A few singers will be headed across the street to one of the restaurants close by so if you would like to join us you are welcome.

The tickets for the event, are free, and of course a donation is welcome by the cathedral. Tickets at the very front of the audience are $50 and reserved seating, so if you would like to be upfront you can get tickets on the St. John the Divine website.

Tickets given to the chorus are actually for seating on the alter so you would be behind the chorus facing the audience, and the seats are great.

I look so forward to meeting those of you coming to the concert.

I'm so glad you are coming and I know you will enjoy the evening. I have been doing this concert for almost 10 years and it is the BEST way to start off the New Year.

Do you want to join us for a bite afterwards?

thanks travelbuff but I think my hubby wants to do something more romantic for dinner that night (it's our last hoorah before starting kids and he's planning a surprise for me, I think). Thanks for the invite though. I hope you understand.

We went to the concert last year and just loved it! What a treat to hear Judy Collins.
We may plan a very last minute trip to the City and, if so, would love to be included. How do we get in touch if this is the case?

Please feel free to email me at g_tweedy@yahoo. I think I might be able to get a couple more tickets if you let me know. We can meet up just before the concert, after our warm-up. I'm easy to spot in the crowd of singers (REDHAIR), lol.

Maria, I really am so pleased that you want to come to the concert, and no problem if you guys want to take off. There are several good restaurants close to the Cathedral, so lots to choose from, if you want to stay close, or head downtown so you can see the fireworks in Central Park.

I had to change my plans and will not be going for New Year's Eve. I went 2 weeks ago with a friend.

Thank you kindly for this wonderful offer, maybe next year, I'll make it.

Wow travelbuff, that's absolutely fantastic and I LOVE Sabat Mater! We are really looking forward to that evening and meeting you also. Thanks again. I have your contact info. Will look for the red head that's part of the choir! I've been reading up and it says to try to get there by 6pm. Is that a true statement?

Because you already have tickets if you are there around 6:30 you won't have a problem. Your tickets are on the Alter so you will have a great view of everything. You can tell the choir members easily we are dressed in black and red and the guys are in tuxes.

If you email me, I'll give you my cel number and we can figure out the best time to meet up.

Anyone else confirming tickets?

I'm sure I can get you a few more tickets, and would LOVE to have you join us.

The Cathedral is not far from you, on the upper west side at 110 and Amsterdam Ave.

We can arrange to meet at the door and I can escort you to your seats.

I know you will enjoy the evening and if you would like to join us for something to eat after, you are welcome.

We start rehearsals tonight for the concert and I just heard that we are going to be a chorus of 125 singers this year so a bit smaller than in previous years. We are now singing 4 pieces so will let you know how the rehearsals go.

Anyone else intersted, I have a couple more tickets.

Is there a way via this forum to contact you direct? I have my cell.

If you email me at g_tweedy@yahoo I will email back with my phone numbers and you are welcome to call. I'd even meet up with you sometime this week for coffee if you have some time.

For the concert, I will be at the Cathedral starting around noon, we have a dress rehearsal and then a break for dinner before the concert starts. Our call is 6:30 for a warm up and 7ish to line up and walk out to the stands.

I am so excited about meeting those of you coming to concert, I know you are going to have a GREAT time.

Hello, Just read your commemt. We are from Oklahoma and planning to attend the concert tomorrow. There are 4 of us. Any help or advise on attending this concert would be much appreciated. What time should we arrive? Do we need a free ticket to get in or just show up and they will let us in without a ticket? Hope to hear from you soon. Mary H
