Spiderman delayed again

I know it's listed on the end of the Broadway thread - but for anyone with tickets Spiderman's opening has been delayed again - and is not scheduled for sometime in mid February. Apparently they;re putting in a new closing number.

It seems the show is tangled in a web of difficulties.

saw it two weeks ago and despite the total lack of accidents and the fabulous sets still thought it is intellectually VERY "delayed."

Announced this am - this afternoon's performance is canceled while safety issues are addressed. They hope to be up and running tonight but it's not definite.

Dep't of Labor has cancelled Spiderman's show tonight - and are now doing a full safety review of the show before they will allow it to go on. there are many concerns from members of the cast that some stunts are not safe. the actor that was i jured yesterday had to have back surgery today (and who knows where that goes the rest of your life?).

Sounds like some major changes are in store.

This show is doomed. Have you read that someone has filed a complaint with the consumer protection agency saying they are committing fraud for not disclosing that the shows are previews in their adverts? What a mess.

I'm not so sure the show is doomed. All this publicity--both "bad" and "good"--has propelled the show into a sellout and the biggest grosser on Broadway. Further, this is one show that will probably be critic-proof. I'm not saying that it will play long enough to earn back its huge cost, but it'll be playing for a while, perhaps quite a while, regardless of its reviews.

I guess the producers of Spiderman are reacting to the heavy criticism of its charging full price for preview performances. This afternoon, I got an email from playbill.com with a special $79 for for $137 "orchestra/flying circle" seats for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday preview performances through February 27.

Here are the details on the offer: Call 877-250-2529 or go to ticketmaster.com and provide the discount code PB1003; or visit the box office on 42nd Street with a printed copy of the offer.

I got the same email, Howard. I like how its says "Now through February 27 ONLY" That is...until the opening is dalayed again. LOL

I've totally lost interest in seeing this show. Who knows what a few months will bring, but right now I wouldn't even pay $79.

Carlota, Didn't you ask for a refund? I posted on the Broadway Banter thread my success with Ticketmaster. They refunded my total ticket purchase price after a simple email request. Did you see the show? What is your review?

A letter writer to today's editorial page of The New York Times suggests to the producers that they "brush up on their Shakespeare" and think twice about opening on the Ides of March.

TC here is a copy and page from my trip report:
About the show: the scenery (I don’t know if you call it that…) is incredible! We hadn’t seen anything like it before in a musical. The story was ok and the songs could be improved. One or two are quite good, but the rest are nothing special and not as good as could be expected specially knowing who is behind this show. We didn’t regret watching it, but I think some things must be improved before the official opening.

I don't think the show is doomed. I think the discounted tickets are a great idea considering all of their problems.

In my opinion, the show's producers offered discount tickets for one, and only one, reason....and it wasn't to be nice to theatergoers by helping them save money for tickets. It was, I feel, strictly a PR move to stave off or countermand the mounting criticism of its possible "deception" (for want of a better word)for charging full price for a work deep in progress.

I agree with Howard. I think they were on the verge of being sued for false advertising since their news ads did not bother to mention that the show was still in previews. I know there had been formal complaints filed.

Thanks for the post Carlota. I think it has to get a lot better for me to spend money. Not so much the unfinished issue as it sounds like even the finished parts aren't that good. We'll see.
