Spectacular places within four/five hours of williamsburg?

I hope to have an extra week before our williamsburg 5 day reunion in late august.

Driving to scenic areas, landscapes, quaint towns, nice meals, and throwing in some cultural activities would be great.

(Baltimore/D.C., etc. not necessary as we have already been there).

I do like small towns, and was thinking of the outer bansk as one trip.. cape may type places.. a ferry or two...

any ideas not to miss in the area?

How about doing the Skyline drive and perhaps part of the Blue ridge parkway stopping in Charlottesville and visiting Monticello-Ashlawn and Micie tavern. It's a nice variety of beautiful nature and history.Paul

I agree with Paul that Charlottesville is a very nice little town. Of course, skyline drive has wonderful scenery as well.
I have not been, but along the coast of VA is a town, St. Micheals? Help me out fodor friends. I hear very nice things about this small seaside town.

ALso, in the western part of VA or WV are the Homestead and the Greenbriar. Great places to relax and be pampered and do some neat things, good food, nice accomodations, pretty scenery.
Hope this helps.

There is a famous inn and restaurant called the Inn at Little Washington in Washington, Virginia. It's very expensive but really an experience. I've been once (didn't sleep there because it was too expensive). We didn't see anyone famous when we were there but apparently there is a heliopad close by for the rich and famous to land, eat and leave!

Outer Banks or Cape May sound about right given your preferences.

Another place is the Keswick. It is located between Richmond and Charlottesville. My parents loved it. Very nice, upscale. My husband played golf and had dinner there. I am yet to visit.

Skyline Drive is the road that goes through Shenadoah NP. It ends/beginsat the northern tip of the Blueridge Parkway.
