Southern New Mexico

In a few weeks, when we drive from Tucson to Albuquerque, we plan to spend a day or two exploring southern New Mexico.

We have been to Carlsbad Caverns.

We plan to visit White Sands on this trip.

What are the most scenic roads and what are the other major attractions in this part of New Mexico?

I am not too familiar with that area, save driving son to NMSU in Las Cruces a few times.
This has some good info:

Take a detour over through Silver City. It's been on my bucket list for some time. I was at White Sands many years ago.
I like the Botanical Garden and aquarium in the west end of ABQ. Several of the museums in Old Town are good.

If you go to Silver City, take a ride north 30 miles, two hours to Gila Cliff Dwellings.

White sands is very nice.

If you are into Native American history, Three Rivers Petroglyph site is along the way.

You could stop at Bosque del Apache and see what wildlife is still around. From there, you can drive south and stop at Fort Craig. The self-guided tour was pretty interesting.

Lincoln County, with the tales of Billy the Kid, and other stories is really a ball. I never expected it to be so interesting and informative. It really is worth a visit. Very enjoyable!

I thought I posted last night. I guess I didn't, or x'd out before I finished.

We really loved White Sands, but were there in the summer and it was hot as hades. We weren't out of the car very long. I had a pup with me and he was miserable.

There's one place I've wanted to see for years and hope to see one day. I don't know if it would be of any interest to you but I just want to check this place out.

At least eat at Dot's Diner. It would be a 1.5 hour detour for you, so may not be of any interest at all.

I also mapped out a route via Ruidoso. Friends in Texas go there and love it. I've not been, but think it would be a great addition if you are looking for an interesting drive.

It would be a good place to overnight if you plan to split the drive up.

If you go to Soccorro, you will be close to the VLA, Very Large Array, which you can tour and the Bosque del Apache for birding. Both are worth visiting.
