South Padre Island
Hi, Considering a trip to S. Padre this October. We have never been before. Beaches we have been too include Fort Lauderdale, Miami and Cozumel. I know we won't have the clear water like Cozumel. May I please have some first hand reports from people who have visited S. Padre as to the beaches, water, things to do, and especially the weather in October. We live in the DFW area and hope to catch a cheap SW Airlines flight to S. Padre. Any help would be appreciated!

we went last year around september, not a lot to do but the weather was wonderful, 2 year old loved it. stayed at the radisson which I would highly recommend, rooms are ok(very much like beach-type hotels), little run down but great pools, we loved the cottage-type rooms looking out to the ocean. have to be careful with the weather because they sometimes have hurricane/type weather but great place to go if just want to swim, very cheap, good fishing

Try www.spionline.com for things to do and restaurants.
SPI will probably be deserted in October. (we were there last August during huricane Brett and it was quite deserted.) October is too late for summer vacationers, too early for snowbirds, and in the middle of hurricane season. If you do decide to go, be sure and go early while the weather and water are still warm.

South Padre Island in October is a great place to be. Prices should be lower than in summer or spring. As far as the weather is concerned, don't be put off by "hurricane season". You have about as much chance of a hurricane hitting then as you do of Troy throwing a touchdown pass this October (maybe a slightly better chance since he retired).Best place at SPI is the Raddisson. The condo units are dated but very spacious and nice.More reasonably priced at the Raddisson are the motel rooms there which are closest to the beach but not as nice. Also Sheraton and Holiday Inn have decent rooms and grounds. Most of the condos are listed with private rental agencies such as Padre Island Rental (956-761-5512). Email me re restaurants, etc.

Personally I did not care for S Padre. When I was there the water and beach were nasty. The whole place seemed run down and nothing but t-shirt shops. It's definitely on my list of places never to return to again! There certainly must be better beaches to spend your hard earned money going to.

You have to stay in a nice hotel there are some old ones there, be careful. For the same price you can do a Funjet package to Can Cun for the same price. October is cheap in the carribbena because of the storms also but you can get $99.00 air the same as to Brownsville. You also have to have a car on SPI unless your just going to stay at one hotel the whole time. Take a Funjet to Can Cun for the same price. Either place you have to worry about storms!

We went to South Padre last year. I did not like it and would never go back. I have been to tons of beaches on the East/West Coast and Florida, and this ranks as my worst vacation ever. Like the other poster, I felt that it was run-down, lots of t-shirt shops etc. No ambiance to be found - the adjoining towns, etc. didn't have alot to offer either. Weather was more humid than I've ever experienced. Beaches weren't that great either. I would definitely recommend checking out other places other than S. Padre.
