South Beach Observations

Some things I have learned during my stay in South Beach:

1) If you are a tourist and you haven't talked to people in shops and whatnot, get to the clubs early (before 11pm on weekends) if you wanna be able to get in. A lot of the cool clothing stores have free passes if you are friendly and buy something. But the later it gets, the crazier it gets.

2) Eating out doesn't have to be expensive. There are 2 good pizza joints (Pizza Rustico on Washington and 9th; Gino's on Washington and 6th or 7th). Puts Chicago pizza to shame.

3) Drinking in these clubs is expensive as hell. Plus you can't buy liquor after 10pm in the stores. So keep this in mind. Bars seem to be fairly cheaper at about $5 a drink. Crobar was like $9-10 a drink.

4) Argentinean women are absolutely beautiful.

5) Be prepared to speak a lot of Spanish. English is almost a minority language here.

6) People here are friendly and warm. I fell in love with the Latin culture down there. I made good friends from Argentina there and definitely we Americans have a lot to learn about being warmer and more passionate.

But, Danny, did the pizza make you angry? (referring to your previous reply to my questions about Chicago)

Actually, I thought the people in downtown Chicago were very warm and friendly, at least to us out-of-towners. We were walking to Cafe Iberico, were in a bit of a hurry and it was taking longer than I expected. I (uncharacteristically) shouted to noone in particular, "Where the HELL is LaSalle!!" A woman who happened to be passing, looked at me sympathetically, stopped and very cordially explained that it was two streets away.

maggi,

yeah, the pizza made me angry. actually, it was more of a shock at first.

don't get me wrong. people in chicago ARE very friendly. but on the streets, people walk around with a slight defense and coldness. this is most likely due to exposure ot cold weather, panhandling, possible crime, and solicitations, which are rampant here.

but the hard looks always turn into smiles and hellos with just the slightest bit of effort.

so maggi, did you ever say where you were from?

Danny, we live in Troy, a suburb of Detroit. My relatives from Europe always comment on how friendly and open we Americans are. In Chicago, we did fall for a panhandler. He saw us looking at a map on a street corner and asked us for directions. He was very cordial and we got into a conversation with him. After a while, he told us he had run out of gas, could we loan him a few bucks, yada, yada and we got the picture. Live and learn.

maggi,

if you live in troy, you should be coming down to chicago more often. no offense to detroit, but it licks.

come down again and i'll show you the cool things about chicago that lie beneath the surface, not the touristy things.
