Sonoma Wineries and Restaurants

My wife and I are traveling to Sonoma for the first time in early December. We are looking for recommendations on interesting wineries. Also looking for restaurants that are offer interesting menus.

Look up the Rafanelli winery. The best Zinfandel and a spectacular cabernet. You can get on their mailing list and order upon their release each year. If you call in the first week you're in luck, after that it will be sold out and you won't normally find it in wine stores anywhere. Nice family too.

We have a favorite B&B in Sonoma county--a bit out of the vineyards ( but about 15 minutes from the Dry Creek vineyard area--.

A great and elegant inn--Applewood Inn and Restaurant. About 15 rooms, lovely setting, nice pool and hot tub. Fabulous food in their restaurant ( very small, mainly for their guests). In Guerneville. YOu can find them on the web---do a search for Applewood Inn Guerneville.

The setting of the Applewood Inn is really beautiful and the rooms are very nice.

However, during our visit, I got the impression that it was being run by people without much experience.

The restaurant was probably the nicest in the area( seemed like mostly casual restaurants in Guerneville), but again, service was spotty by it's young inexperienced staff. The restaurant is open to anyone with no preference given to guests staying at the inn.

My husband and I love the Sonoma valley. Go to Healdsburg. Walk around the square and peak in the window of about 5 great restaurants and pick one to your taste and budget. They are all great. One day take the Dry Creek Road all the way to Preston Winery and stop off at all the tiny, mom and pop wineries along the way. Meet the owners and take your time. Preston has a bocce court. You play, you drink, you enjoy. Buena Vista Winery, off the Sonoma Square, is the oldest. On the square is the chamber of commerce. Trot through there and pick up a ton of great info. The Raven is the movie theater accross the street. Check their list of up-coming screenings - usually very good. And definately eat at the restaurant next to it - Ravenous, for dinner. Don't forget!!! Sonoma is our favorite valley of the two. Shh - don't tell anyone.
