Homers on Green Bay Road in Wilmette north of Chicgo has incredible home-made peach ice cream - and shaved ice in Hawaii is good but nothing can beat the Italian Ice on Taylor street in Chicaco with chunks of fruit in it.

The University of Wisconsin- Madison has an ice cream lab or factory or whatever and I remember it being pretty darn good, but we also had a frozen custard place off campus- more like a little stand- that was ridiculously, addictively good. I always ordered cookies & cream shakes.

In Door County, Wisconsin, there's an ice cream place called Wilson's that's just terrific.

Agree that Cold Stone and Maggie Moo's are part of what's wrong with america! 31 Flavors too!

How a dump like cold stone can stay open in a quality-ice-cream city like Boston is beyond me! And maggie moo's tastes like lard!

I think Bruster's is pretty good for a "going out for ice cream" kind of place (even though I'm a "SOFT SERVE CUSTARD" chick), locations we've been to were in Virginia Beach, Hilton Head, and Charleston SC. Cold Stone has absolutely no flavor and melts very fast. I think it's made mainly of whole milk. I prefer Marble Slab.
Would love to try Kopp's whenever we get to WI.

My votes for the best ice cream......in New England:
#1 Richardson's Dairy in Middleton, MA It's just about 12 miles northeast of Boston on Rt. 114 and worth the trip. You get to see the cows that make your ice cream and in the spring, the calves. They have a wonderful new brick building with inside and outside tables and chairs. You can also play miniature golf, drive or bat balls. It's a real destination. But the best reason to come is the ice cream. Favorite flavor? DH's is Rum Raisin; mine M&M Vanilla or Moosetracks. They are open ALL YEAR and always busy. You can get milk there also.
#2 Kellerhaus near Weir's Beach, NH on Route 3. Old German-type chalet building offering homemade ice cream and a make-it-yourself sundae bar! Their vanilla and chocolate-chocolate chip are the best. You can see Lake Winnepeasaukee from the windows in their dining room and play the antique player piano. We MUST have a sundae there every summer!

New on my list but outside New England.....Ken Dawe's Frozen Custard in St. Louis. Not sure if that's really considered ice cream, as we don't really see that variety here in New England. But it's sooooo good.

Agree with the previous poster ...

RICHARDSON'S in Middleton, MA absolutely ROCKS!!!!!!!!!! The best rum-raisin I've ever tasted, and my DGD loves the cotton candy. My son & family have moved away this summer to the West Coast. I'm sure gonna miss that ice cream!!! So, what's the best ice cream in Fresno, CA, guys???

Seven years and four days later.....it's still hot! 94 where I am and so many other US parts in the broiler. So it's got to be... TIME FOR ICE CREAM!

Curly Creme in Plains (Northeast) PA. They are only open from Memorial Day to Labor Day. Very creamy soft serve. Chocolate, vanilla and the "flavor of the week"!

Sandypaws - I'm a former Chicagoan and Bobtail is a new one on me. Will have to give it a try - maybe the one that's right in my old neighborhood!

I agree the cold stone is crap ice cream.

Up in the Nashua area, the following are good:

Hayward's
Countrybrook Farms (Hudson)

Berthillon vanille is tres memorable. It's been 9 years since we first tried it and we still talk about it! (and I'm a choco-holic)
