snorkeling on Lanai

We are planning our first trip to Hawaii in January. We are interested to know if we can rent snorkel equipment at Hulopo Beach (I understand it is a 5 minute walk from the harbor area). Or is it better to take a snorkeling tour? We only want to spend about 2 to 3 hours snorkeling, then explore the island. Also, have found a web site that seems to have a good deal on helicopter tours with Boss Frog. Don't see that company listed in Fodor's so would appreciate any feedback from anyone who is familiar with this company. Thanks for your help!

a wee bit confused........are you staying on Lanai or taking the Ferry from Lahaina? How do you plan exploring the island? Do you have a car meeting you at the ferry landing?

January surf conditions might not allow snorkeling...but if the water's calm, you'll have plenty to see in those waters just off the hotel.

And has been pointed out by gyppielou, you'll want a car if you plan to sightsee the island.

Thanks for your replies. We will be taking the ferry from Lahaina for a 1 day trip to Lanai. We would like to explore the island of Lanai with a guide, or we may just rent a jeep and explore on our own. Then, if possible, go snorkeling on our own. Nothing is firmed up at this point. Perhaps there is a tour that includes both snorkeling and a tour? I have contacted a few agencies via e-mail for info re that.

Auntie thanks for pointing out that the surf may be too rough in January for snorkeling. I will be disappointed, but
sure we will have a great time anyway! Seasons Greeting to you from Vermont!!

Auntie's point about winter surf is a good one. Yet, we snorkeled the east side of Lana`i in November '03 and the water was as calm and clear as lake water. Also snorkeled off the shore from the hotel-no problem for our 6 year old girls. Enjoy.

At the end of October '03 it was too rough for us to snorkel below the Manele Bay Hotel.

Let's see , we were there a couple of years ago in January.....good snorkling at Manele Bay, although the day we left had monsoon, can't stand on your own two feet at the ferry dock conditions.
So it changes daily........and that said, we did see spinner dolphins oh so briefly on our way out of Lanai....but our Jan tript to Maui showed a few distant whales, and last years Christmas in Maui showed not a one....timing is everything!!!!!!!!
