Snorkeling at Lanai or Molikini Crater

We are going to Maui in May and I would like to snorkel/snuba at one of these places. Any recommendations?

I went snorkeling at Molikini a few years ago. Absolutely beautiful. We went on a charter boat owned by some wildlife foundation. All the proceeds went to a fund protecting the marine life in the area. Buy a disposable underwater camera (real cheap) and don't forget to use sunscreen on your back when snorkeling.

My husband and son did the catamaran from the Maui "Prince over to Molokini and it was so rough out there that they had to come back and snorkel at some beachside property that wasn't too marvellous. Only when we returned and talked about it to others did we find out that this more often the way then not, so really do your research. Annemarie

Weather and sea conditions affect snorkeling conditions greatly. The last time we spent several days on Lanai the waves were high enough for surfing and there was one surfer. Snorkeling was next to impossible so I can not rate the area. Molikini is your best bet if the weather is favorable. However go with a small group in a rubber boat that will let you drift snorkel along the top of the crater. Large groups and boats will keep you all in a limited spot and then chum a few fish in. If you intend to dive get in touch with one of the top shops and they will take you to where it is best based on conditions at the time.

Aloha Julie,
We have snorkeled at both spots and both are good spots. The boat trip to Lanai takes about an hour. The beach park is close to the boat landing and has really nice facilities. We rented a jeep on Lanai and made a whole day of touring the island and snorkeling. Bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the day.
Snorkeling is always better in the morning. The boat trip to Molikini is a bit shorter. Of corse you din't actually land on the island so you have snorkeling time but no beach time and you are snorkeling in deeper water. Both are nice just different. While in Maui try snorkeling at Ahini Bay , a marine preserve. A nice easy snorkel for beginers and usually not too crowded. No boat trip needed! Have fun.
