We'd like to ski for a one night trip leaving from NYC. Is there enough to do for a family of beginner/intermediate/advanced/non skiers in the Hudson Valley region( tuxedo ridge)? We've been to the Berkshires last year and while it was fabulous for the non-skier, the others are not feeling compelled to return.

I don't know exactly what you are looking for, but the Hudson Valley doesn't have great skiing. What about the Poconos(Camelback, Shawnee Mountain, NJ(Mountain Creek), NY(Holiday, Hunter, Windham)or CT(Mohawk)? If you can stay over one night, than head to MT. Snow in VT.

Where did you go skiing in the Berkshires? Jiminy Pk is the best mtn there. If the skiiers didn't like that than there is little in the Hudson Valley they'll like.

Hunter maybe - but only because of the size & snowmaking capability they have, but it doesn't have a lot of vertical drop. It can also get packed like the Cross Bronx Expy with NYC crowds on weekends. It's a big mtn.

Windham good and is quite popular, but is probably pretty much on par with Jiminy. Mohawk in CT is 2-3 notches lower. Good for kids for a day trip but quite boring for intermediate/advanced skiiers.

Ditto for the Poconos - several 'ok' mtns but nothing that the advanced skiier would love.

For better skiing you'd really need to head to VT.

Yes, I fondly remember having people ski over my skis with no apology at Hunter. What a zoo.

J62 is right, if you want a bigger mountain, you'll have to get thee to Vermonterry. Mt Snow is the southern most resort.

We went to a mountain further south than Jiminy Peak, near Great Barrington. Is Jiminy Peak much nicer than this? How far is Jiminy Peak from Manhattan? Is it doable as a one night trip?

We were at Gore Mnt. near Lake George and really liked that. They do a great job with crowds (we didn't wait longer than about 8 mins. for any lift). Lots of intermediate terrain.

Catamount is the ski area near Great Barrington. Jiminy is much nicer. Maybe 1 hr further from NYC. Total 3 to 3.5hrs depending the the origin, route, and time of day.

Definitely doable for an overnighter from NYC.

Still not VT, but also not as far if driving time is a concern for you.

Butternut Basin is the mountain in Great Barrington. Catamount is near it but in NY.
