Side Trip From Vegas: Zion: But we are't hikers! Any thoughts?

We are planning a Labor day trip and I am thinking about adding on a 3 day side trip after we "do" the strip. Maybe Zion, and stay in Springdale for relaxing by a the pool, maybe a Jeep tour of Zion. Is this area a waste of time as we are not really hikers. The area looks breath taking!

The other option would be 3 days at the Hyatt on Lake Mead, and chilling out by the pool. This place looks nice, but read some bad reviews on tripadvisor.

We have 4 days at the Bellagio, and then 3 maybe for a different experience.

Any thoughts or suggestions?

Husband didn't really like the Grand Canyon idea. We aren't campers either!!

thanks!

LOL....OK now that we know what you aren't......

Just kidding. With 3 days I would do 2 at Zion and 1 at Bryce. Very different parks and close to each other. Both can be appreciated without being "hikers". Are you able to walk around much? Lots of what is referred to as hiking is mostly walking. The riverside walk for example. Even on the hikes, there are very well maintained trails.

At any rate, you can see the canyon very well if you just get off the shuttle once in awhile and gaze up at the beautiful rock walls.

I say go for it!

One other thing:

To me, a Jeep tour kind of ruins the whole park/nature experience thing. Both parks offer horse back tours that are very cool. Unless of course you aren't horse people.

ha..well, we can walk! We are in our early 40's and used to be very athletic, but not much any more...

I was looking at Bryce for that 3rd night too.

I just want to get out of the city and enjoy the incredible scenery at the parks.

Thanks!

we aren't horse people...lol..but I would like to try it!

I was looking at a sunset tour that looked cool.

I am more game for adventure than dh. He's a "pool" and "adult beverage" man.

In Springdale you could make use of the nice new spa at Flanigans. It's very good, I got 3 services there last fall. Their pool is small though, so stay somewhere else for the pool (I think Desert Pearl has a better pool).

I'd recommend combining both Bryce and Zion also. My parents are in their 60's and were able to really enjoy both of these parks while doing short and easy hikes. At Zion they took a ranger lead 2 hour shuttle ride, which included very short excursions from the shuttle, and they really liked that experience. The slots fill up quickly, so if that interests you try to sign up early at the visitor center. You also may want to visit Valley of Fire on the way back to Vegas. It's very beautiful and you can see a lot of it from the car.

Zion is worth the trip My spouse and I occasionally travel to St. George from LV and the inlaws go to Zion/Bryce once per year as little getaways. Obviously the parents are a little up there so there is no walking involved. Even if you are not phisically active Zion is worth it, very beautiful.

I'm another vote for two nights Zion and one night Bryce.

My DH and I will go to Zion and spend a week just relaxing because the scenery is so beautiful.

Thanks for the advice. DH now might be off on a trip to some foreign place with a relief org. that weekend that I want to go to Zion. I know, I want it to be all about me...lol...but children without food might take priority.

(I am being serious about his trip, but humourous about my plight).

I might try and add on Zion at the beginning of the trip.

Since I am more "Hilton" than KOA, and nice place to stay in the Bryce area?

About the only hotel near Bryce Canyon is the Ruby's Inn Best Western. The rooms aren't fancy, but mine was clean and comfortable.

If you have time take the drive from Bryce to Capital Reef. It's an excellent scenic drive.

I recommend the Desert Pearl in Springdale. I also had a very good meal at The Spotted Dog Cafe in Springdale too.

At Zion, if you do nothing else, at least walk the trail down to the beginning of The Narrows, and the Emerald Pools trail as well.

I made a reservation at Desert Pearl for two of the nights, but this might have to be canceled now because of dh's schedule...

Adding Zion to the beginning of our Vegas trip will be the busy Labor day weekend, and Desert Pearl is booked.

By the way, the woman I spoke with at Desert Pearl was very helpful and friendly. (this issue was mentioned on the board in the past).

thanks

The area is spectacular and worth the trip for a non hiker.

Beachkomer...does your screenname mean you like water?
How about renting innertubes and "floating" down the virgin river in zion. And, stay at the Lodge, before you enter the park at Zion. Beautiful log lodge, pool and view!

Yes, I love the ocean, and have been to Hawaii four times!

This trip option sound more fun than Mandalay bay's water feature!

I will look into this adventure!
Have you done this?
thanks!

We've been tubing on the Virgin River for about 20 years. Back then you could tube in Zion, but they haven't allowed it in the park for a few years now. They do allow it in Springdale, just across from the Watchman Campground.

Our boys loved this and we would spend a week at a time in Zion when they were young just for several days of tubing. We would bring our own tubes but you can rent them in town just within walking distance of the park entrance.

Utahtea-
They do not allow tubing in Zion anymore? What a shame, it was one of our favorite vacations several years ago!
Where is Springdale? How far away is that from Zion Park?

Springdale is the little city right at the entrance to Zion National Park. We have camped in Zion and walked across the new bridge they built next to the new visitor center and walked to town to get ice. The tube rental place is not far from there.

You still see a lot of Zion as you tube. For a while, the town of Springdale was also going to ban the tubing but I guess enough people objected so they didn't.

Utahtea-I guess this is the part of the river my kids and I went on.
Beachkomer could rent the innertubes right at the entrance to the park, then their truck would drive her family up to the campground area where they would begin their drift down the river, right?
