Where in Hawaii ?
Anywho, here's a short list of carriers that fly non-stops SFO to Honolulu-our favorite, and quite often the best fare is Hawaiin Airlines, you can also shop for fares with:
Northwest
United
American
Delta
Alaska
USAir
lots of choices.

If you go to a website such as priceline.com or expedia.com or orbitz.com and search for airfare from SFO to HNL, you'll get a list of all airlines which fly the San Francisco to Honolulu route.
Going to an outer island? Just enter the name of the island (Maui, Hawai`i, Kaua`i, Moloka`i or Lana`i) and the website will insert the airport code.

You are all correct and helpful, of course, but I am still having a hard time.
It would be so great if any of these airlines had direct flights from SFO to OGG, LIH, KOA or ITO.
I've tried the big search engines, but I think I'm more confused than ever.
I will try OAG, though I have no idea what that is.
HNL is probably going to be on the final flight itinerary, but is there any way it can be bypassed?
Thanks so much.

I don't understand why you are finding this so difficult.
United has direct flights from SFO to KOA and to LIH.
If you can fly out of Oakland, there are direct flights to Kona on Aloha Airlines. I'm sure you can also find this information on Hawaiian Airlines website. There is no reason why you would have to fly through HNL unless you want to.

Mels -- Hang in there! Just found out this morning my friend is relocating to HNL in a month or so and will be working across the street from you. I'll do an intro when she settles in and I'm sure she won't consider a bypass.

when you use one of the fare finder sites make sure you indicate 'nonstop only' flights and those are the ones that will pop up first in the list. There are lots of direct flights to Maui & Big Island. Aloha has them out of Oakland. I think ATA is out of SFO. Good luck.

Well, a travel agent could maybe be of service, but the honeymooners are trying to do the entire trip from mid atlantic city to their chosen destinations in Hawaii with only award miles and Capital 1 points. Since I am their designated planner, it is me. I don't know any TAs that will work with awards and points and no cash involved.
I did this for DD two years ago for her honeymoon, but many more miles were available to them than is the present case.
So I was going a little nuts trying to figure out alliances, connections, minimun number of award miles needed (seems to be more and more everyday) and Capital 1 in there, also.
Add in inflexibility of dates, as it is their honeymoon, and maybe now you can understand why I was having a bit of a hard time. Or maybe you can't. Doesn't matter, I was. I posted feeling desperate, and I appreciate those who kindly offered help.
SFO is their only choice, because home to SFO were the only award tickets they could get. United does bypass HNL, but not for a price they could cover with their Capital 1 rewards.
Orlando Vic, OAG is great. Since I do a lot of trip planning for clients, I will be signing up. The free trail convinced me.
R5: I've spent a day looking at all your suggestions. Thank you.
I also had my list of all the airport codes before I started, and went straight to kayak this morning. It is the points, awards, and tight schedule that had my head spinning.
Ag: I guess some things are just easier for some than for others. I hope I've explained why I was finding it so difficult. If not, write me off as a boob. I have had a horrible week, beginning with a bad accident on Thursday, and this just seemed quite difficult to me.
Denise: like OAG, farecast.com is new to me. I will be exploring it shortly.
Melissa, don't be sad. If I were personally coming to Hawaii, I would stop at HNL, I promise.
I wish they could have flown out of other cities, but as I said, there award miles only got them to SFO. Then, they didn't want to stop in SFO, so I was frantically searching for flights that matched their arrival at SFO with a safe transfer time. Maybe someone here could have done it better, but these folks are going to Hawaii for free with really very little accumulated awards. I was maybe a little dramatic, but boy was I feeling frustrated.
TAW, thanks for the tip. Thanks to everyone that was helpful.

Sorry to sound so harsh, tuscanlifeedit-I assumed you were trying to make reservations on flights without restrictions. They might be expecting you do to something that just isn't realistic. You have to match dates, flight times, eligible mileage awards, and airports. Most flights to Hawaii leave in the morning, and theat is just not going to be a reasonable option if they intend to fly from the midwest and then out to Hawaii the same day. Something may have to give.
As you mentioned, it worked previously when you had more miles to work with. Perhaps someone could just buy the airline tickets for them and give you more to work with. Best of luck.

That's a great idea - speading the night in SF.
The other choice if they are willing to go via land a bit is to take BART from SF Airport to Oakland Airport. There are a lot of flights to Hawaii out of Oakland. I can't remember a single flight to Hawaii that I've taken out of SF.
tuscanlifeedit: I feel your pain! Relatives and some friends frequently ask me to make reservations. They can't understand when I tell them something is unavailable and they'll have to it like yesterday! Best of luck to you!
