The problem I see is with the 4 large suitcases! Don't know that they'll fit into the trunk of a cab. Four people will entirely fill the passenger part unless your kids are very little. Can't you leave some of the stuff at home? If so, I agree with the taxi into the city.

I seem to recall that some of the van services have a group rate. I would call one of them (perhaps Super Shuttle) and see what they'll charge for 4 people. They might also agree not to take any other passengers, so that you won't have any unnecessary stops.
I don't recall if the cabs charge more for extra people or luggage. Does anyone know?

Vosaki,
Rufii said he has two kids. Two adults plus two kids means four suitcases. Why do you assume this is excessive? For all you know, they are visiting friends in SF after spending a month in China. What's your problem, dude?
Please try not to heckle. It is not helpful.

We have the four suitcases for the 7 days of additional vacation following the 4 in SF. Carmel, Big Sur, Morro Bay, Sequoia, Death Valley and the final 2 days in Vegas. I am not picking up our rental van until day 4 in SF, thinking that we will not need a vehicle for most of the SF visit.(I plan to return to the airport by myself on day 4 to pickup the van.
