SFO Car Rentals

Just realized that we need to book a rental car for our upcoming trip to SF. Is anyone familiar with the layout at the airport? Dollar seems to have the best rates, but I don't want to be shuttled from 20 miles away. Are any of the agencies actually on-site, or are they all in a similar location with a short shuttle distance?

I know some of you probably feel we don't need a car (at least in the city), but since we're doing lots of day trips I've just decided to get one for my peace of mind.

Thanks for the input!

They're "on site," as in at the airport, but you do have to take a short shuttle ride. I think Dollar's in with the rest of them. I rented a car from Avis there last year -- took about 5 minutes to get from the terminal to the where the car was.

Rented via Hertz in SFO a few weeks ago.

ALL of the car rental counters and cars are in a parking garage a short bus ride away.

Add to that the fact the SFO is STILL under construction! Yes, we know it was supposed to be done by now---but it's the old story. There are also rental sites in the city, if that would make you happier.

Now that I've FOUND my thread...thanks for the feedback. We decided to go with Avis.

Kam, how much extra time should we allow on the return trip due to the construction?
