SF with Workaholic DH
Main goal of this trip was to get DH away from work for a week and to have some fun. We both went to college in the Bay Area and have been back several times, but this time we did it as tourists (slow paced though). Thanks to all in Fodors who offered (as usual) great tips.
Stayed at a time-share at The Suites of Fisherman’s Warf through II. They claim it’s a 5 star—I’d say maybe 3+, but the location was great—right on a cable car and major bus line—and walking distance to North Beach and Chinatown. Weather varied from sunny and cool to rainy.
Highlights:
Easytraveler took us around SF Presidio to stop and see some of the incredible views and then on to wine country which was great. What a fantastic person! Major WOWs to the garden at Ferrari-Carano and the grounds at Artesa. We had dinner with LoveItaly, which was also so much fun. How great to meet fellow Fodorites when traveling!
SF Jazz Festival. Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, Oscar Castro-Neves, & Airto put on one of the best jazz performances I’ve ever been to. (Loved it so much, we went to see them here in Seattle at Jazz Alley when we got home.
DeYoung Museum—absolutely spectacular new museum—fabulous architecture—modern with gorgeous wooden floors and a wonderful flow and lighting—the view from the tower is just awesome. (Maybe someday the collection will be as memorable as the setting.)
SF Museum of Modern Art.
Palace of the Legion of Honor.
View from top of Coit Tower (thank you Stu Dudley)
Best meals:
(Due to overspending in Italy and Spain in April, I tried to keep these costs down, and even saved $$$ by getting an Entertainment book prior to trip, which also gave two for one at the Legion of Honor)
L’Osteria del forno at 519 Columbus (www.losteriadelforno.com)
Andale Taqueria at 2150 Chestnut (Entertainment book)
The Helmand at 430 Broadway (Afghani) (Entertainment book)
Utopia Café at 130 Waverly Pl. (Chinese) (Entertainment book)
Worst meal:
Golden King on Clay (Entertainment book)
Great find:
Coit Liquor in North Beach--good prices on wine and they sell excellent Acme bread (walnut loaf was our favorite)
Worst experience:
$100 in dining coupons stolen from DH’s jacket checked in at SFMOMA
Overall was a good trip. DH didn’t even bring his laptop (YEAH!).
Would be happy to answer any questions, etc. Thanks again to all the Fodorites who gave us great tips and A HUGE THANK YOU again to Easytraveler.

Hey, Artlover, I agree, EasyTraveler is a fantastic person!
Walnut bread is so good! Next time go to Embarcadero market and take home several loaves. The sellers advise to keep bread in the freezer. It works for freshness.
Thank you for your lovely report!

Hi, artlover! Glad to see that you got back home OK after all that wild driving around Sonoma and Napa "just to avoid the traffic" - LOL!
Sooo happy to have met you and you DH - I should be the one saying "thank you" - it was great to meet a fellow Fodorite and (slightly befuddled DH - "Do you really KNOW this person? Why are we going with someone we've never met? LOL!) and to be able to chat about so many different things! Thank you for a wonderful and fun first time meeting! Hope we will have more in the future!
BTW, thanks for taking the rain back with you to the Northwest.
Because the skies cleared and were wonderfully blue again, I was able to go up to Marin County (hiked Mt Tam) and return via SF last weekend. Went to the opera - Verdi's La Forza del Destino and remembered that you like modern versions of opera. Sorry, I still can't get used to the idea of machine guns and Verdi. Singing was great, especially the baritone, while the tenor resorted to louder and louder shouting as the evening worn on.
Agree completely with you on the De Young and am so glad you were able to visit the completely rebuilt museum. It's really worth a trip. The view is gorgeous as you have stated. I especially liked the Queen Hatsepsut special exhibit, thought it was just as good as the King Tut exhibit which we went to see down at LACMA. What did you think?
So much more to talk about - when are you coming back?
Faina: part of my Bay Area trip this last weekend passed through Berkeley where I FOUND (!!!) Sketches, the gelato place SAB had mentioned. So, we've got to go soon - it was a mighty struggle not to try the gelato without you!
To you all, thanks for the kind words, but the feeling is mutual. You all are wonderful! It's great to be able to share the beauty of this world - pass the favor along. Next time show someone what a great place your area of this world is - keep the ball rolling!
I gained so much from eeting with artlover and her DH!

Hi easy! Well, I didn't intentionally bring the rain back with me...but seems it's back anyway.
Glad you liked the opera. We didn't make that one this time.
You've really shown how great this website can be...I plan to "pass it on" in the future with others who come to visit Seattle and hope you've inspired others to do so as well.

AnnMarie,
I truly believe this is what timeshares are best for--getting people like my DH to take a break! Otherwise they are throwing away money, which is something he doesn't like to do either. And BTW, you don't have to buy "new"--you can get better deals on resales. Good luck.
