Sf to Las Vegas

In April you'll really only have one option - SF to Bakersfield to Ridgecrest to DV. And absolutely nowhere along the route worth a stay, until you get to Lone Pine just outside DV. (or you could go B'field to Barstow and up to the back side of DV - but that route is even worse re places to stay)
I'd consider flying SF to LV and driving from there to Death Valley.

You do have other options. Of course the best would be Tioga Pass, Hwy 120 through Yosemite, but that road will still be closed in April. Sonora Pass Hwy 108 and Ebbetts pass hwy 4 will more than likely still be closed by mid-April.
Carson Pass Hwy 88 is open but they do closed if it snows hard enought...and it still can snow in April. Taking Carson Pass Hwy 88 isn' any farther than janisj's route. It's a heck of a lot more SCENIC than I-5 or Hwy 99!!!
If Carson Pass is closed then you can check to see if Hwy 50 is still open.

Places to stay along the way would be Lee Vining, Mammoth Lakes, Bishop or Lone Pine.

Great suggestions from the other Fodorites!
I like Mammoth Lakes, which tends to get overshadowed by Yosemite.
mid-April is a great time to visit Death Valley!
There's also a one-star motel right in the heart of Death Valley.

blancalita: you didn't say where you will be coming from, but driving through a desert is not your usual joy ride.
Bring lots of water, make sure you have a full gas tank, that your tires are properly inflated and that you have a hat, sunscreen, etc. I would also suggest that you not stray off the paved roads.
If you want to wander around the sand dunes, you should keep your car in sight at all times.
Dante's Peak is wonderful, but the entire drive through Death Valley is always memorable with great scenery.
Enjoy and stay safe!
