Planning to visit SF the end of June. Looking at 4 lovely B&Bs but all without air-conditioning since they're converted Victorian homes.
1. Should that be an important factor for lodging in June?
2. Has anyone stayed at the White Swan, Golden Gate Hotel,Petite Auberge, or Union Street Inn?
3. If I need air-conditioning, considering Nob Hill Lambourne or the Prescott...any feedback?

It is unlikely that it will be warm enough for air conditioning. Typically it doesn't get much warmer than 70 in June. There are however always the freak weather conditions that could occur. Not likely to be warm enough for shorts. Probably foggy and cold.

The short answer is NO.

The longer answer is "Probably not".
June in San Francisco is usually the start of the summer fog cycle. Even if we do get what we here call a "heat wave", it doesn't last more than a couple of days and it is almost never humid heat. A typical June day would have fog or low clouds in the morning, clearing and 60's in the afternoon, and fog rolling in again after 6:00 p.m. Of course, if you spend time in the western part of town (Cliff House, Legion of Honor, etc.) it might be foggy all day at that time of year.

If you are inclined towards one of the B&B's you mentioned, go for it.

The reason Tony Bennett left his heart in San Francisco is that he went there during the summer fog season and never could find it for the fog. Seriously, though, the fog usually dissipates around noon, and the days always seem cool. It would be a record-breaker if even one day in June got up over 75 degrees. You won't need A/C unless there is another big SF fire. Good luck.

Bring a sweater and a windbreaker. You'll probably need it.

Don't be discouraged by the predictions of fog though - its one of the attractions of the city. One of my favorite things is to watch the fog drift in through the Golden Gate.

So just be prepared with long sleeved clothing - layers are the best since it may be foggy in the mornings, sunny in the afternoons, windy in one part of the city, calm in another part.

Unfortunately the summer months, June through August will be foggy most if not all of the day in SF. Low 60's for the high are the norm. It often feels cooler than that with the wind chill, hence J Correa's good advice about the wind breaker. A light sweater would also be a good idea.

I've been to the White Swan and Petite Auberge and prefer the White Swan. I like the rooms with the fireplaces.

As long as your room has a window you can open, you will not need air conditioning. I have lived in the Bay Area for 35 years and have never lived in an apartment or house with air conditioning. Even if the temperature is high during the day, it is always cool at night. I would guess that we sleep under a down comforter about 355 nights of the year. Have a great trip!

Everyone has given you good info. Absolutely no need for a/c. Just hope the heat is working.

As is often said -- you can always tell the summer tourists in SF. They are the ones with blue legs and brand new sweat shirts.

Remember the Mark Twain quote, more or less: "The coldest winter I ever spent was summer in San Francisco."

Underhill, I just referred to that quote on another thread and was informed that Mark Twain never said it. If you Google the quote, you'll find that is, in fact, true. He never said it.

What an oxymoron; San Francisco and Air Conditioning.

I was there in August one year and froze my butt off. Coming from the steamy deep south, it was great however I didn't realize SF isn't very warm.

We experienced one gloriously hot-ish day in SF in June one year, but it cooled off FAST as soon as the sun went down; AC not even a consideration.

Actually Mark Twain said the funniest monkey he ever saw holding a kielbassa while tipping a tug boat pilot was in SF.

Marilyn--you just wait. In another month or two someone will find that Twain DID make that comment about SF. Even if he didn't it sure sounds like something he would have said, being a man of such wit.

It's such a great quote, you'd think whoever DID say it would want credit, wouldn't you? I think I'll continue to quote it as "someone once said" rather than Mark Twain.

I remember that a few years ago, San Francisco had a heat wave with temperatures even approaching 100 F. That was very rare, though.
