SF-Alcatraz
Hey SF experts...I'm planning to make advance ticket reservations to Alcatraz and am wondering what the best time/day is to go. It appears we have our choice of departure times. Are mornings too foggy or does that add to the "aura"? Are weekends too busy, or is everyday pretty much the same? Thanks in advance.

Hi Kelly,
We were advised here on this board to take an early afternoon tour and we were very glad we did! (Thanks Kam and/or SFGhost!)
We took the 1:15 pm tour and were very happy with it. The mornings ARE very foggy, and chillier than usual; be sure to wear layers on the tour! And often those taking the later tours feel rushed through by the park rangers.
Every day is busy in San Francisco; weekends especially so. Regardless, you will have a wonderful time!

When I was out at San Francisco I went to Alcatraz and I also went at about 1:15 PM. The fog usually stays around for some of the morning hours although usually lets up by mid day around the area. On the island I was able to get great pictures of the San Francisco sky line and the Golden Gate bridge.

I don't recall the exact time of day I toured Alcatraz, it seems it was late morning. My husband had a meeting and I was on my own. I arrived at the pier to leave for Alcatraz and it truly was a trip I will never forget. Not at all what I expected. By all means, rent the head phones for the full effect of the tour, it is unforgetable. I have been fortunate to travel all over the world, and this was one eery experience I will never forget.
