All right, Kathy!!!1

Now, while we're on the subject, anybody had BUTTERCAKE? My Philly childhood including stopping after church on sundays at the Mayfair Bakery (not the diner) for this incredible coffeecake oozing with - you guessed it - butter! We had to go to confession the next day after that treat!

Anybody else hate "cake" donuts? They don't even deserve the donut name!

The key is to eat the donut within 30 minutes of it being made - that is a big part of the problem with Dunkin Donuts. We have had some atrocious grease piles at Tim Hortons and some OK ones - I think it has to do with age of donut. (?Vintage) The best I have had are in fall at any little farm/cider stand that makes them in front of you.

Just thought of another question - family wants to try Krispy Kreme - we will be driving Boston to Baltimore and then DC - I have promised to research where we could visit a Krispy Kreme enroute - any suggestions?

All I can add to this thread is: THANK GOD KRISPY KREME IS NOT IN CANADA!!! We practically inhaled the original glazed donuts in Las Vegas last wk. We stayed at the Excalibur Hotel and a Krispy Kreme store was there. Every morning fresh outta the oven. The best!!

I must be missing something here. You always hear people raving about Krispy Kreme so last summer while driving by one we stopped, anticipating a taste of heaven. What a disappointment! I didn't even finish my donut, I didn't want to waste the calories. Am I the only one who doesn't think the Krispy Kremes are great?

I find the whole "Krispy Kreme" bandwagon hilarious.

I grew up less than a mile of a Krispy Kreme bakery and enjoyed their fresh donuts all my life. As a kid it was fun sitting at the coffee counter watching through a large glass window, thousands of donuts slide by on conveyor belts.

Suddenly, Krispy Kreme is the Hot "NEW" company! Somebody at Krispy Kreme is a marketing wizard - now they are everywhere.

BUT, and if you eat enough a very big BuTT, Krispy Kreme donuts are no better than most others if you don't get them FRESH! I bought some packaged ones recently and ALMOST threw them away.

There are great donuts everywhere, but the main ingredient has to be FRESHNESS! If they are not baked on site - go elsewhere.

Nina, I agree, they are too sweet. I like a puffy, airy, glazed donut, freshly made. Maybe we just aren't getting the real deal here in California, but I also don't see what the hype is about. So sweet!

LJ, this may not qualify as "real donut" advice, but it involves a trip to Hawaii so....

The best deep-fried, glazed morning dough I've had was a malassada from Agnes' Porteguese Bake Shop in Kailua, on Oahu. Tres important that you eat them right away, otherwise they turn into an unappealing hunk of deep fried dough, but when still hot they are heaven. Eaten with a cup of Kona coffee, watching the sun rise over the island doesn't hurt the experience either!

I don't like Krispy Creme, either. Too sweet and too airy...

In Los Angeles, in the Farmers' Market: Bob's Donuts. Made right there,no other location, the best. I like the plain buttermilk, myself ( not a sweet fan).

Anybody who bases their itinerary on a freaking donut is an idiot. Stay home.

The owner of a bakery was giving a tour of the place to the local chamber of commerce. When the group went in back, they saw a man making rolls by kneading the dough on his bare belly. The group was really surprised and disgusted at seeing the man make the rolls this way. The owner said, "well, then, you don't want to be here when he's making the donuts."

I love Krispy Kreme!! When I was little my dad would take me to the one near our house. Thanks for bringing back a grand memory with this discussion.

Many years ago there was Thomas' Donut Shop (a beach shack) across from the beach in Panama City, FL. Not sure if it is still there, but remember them vividly. Spent $200 there over a week's vacation. Of course, they had pizza and other stuff too. Everything a 15 yr old needs.

Use to be a shop in Jacksonville, FL that had great donuts, "angel cremes", donuts filled with sugary white creme that would melt in your mouth and get all over your face when you bit into them. Sorry, I don't remember the name of it.

Feeling chubby, you're going to feel even worse when I tell you that donuts are FRIED!!! in GREASE!! Ain't no donut ever seen the inside of an oven (except in a pathetic effort to reheat).

JPM: You're right about freshness. The Krispy Kreme in Tampa has a light outside which they flip on the instant the new donuts are ready.

Joker: LOL!!!!

The best doughnuts I have had are from a shop in Elliot, Maine called "Downeast Doughnuts". They are incredible and are not at all greasy. I can't describe what makes them so excellent, they just are!

Amy -- Two years ago I vacationed at Panama City Beach, FL, and Thomas' Donuts was still there! The place probably hasn't changed much. It was about a half-mile walk each way; great early morning activity.

Thomas' Bismarck filled with key lime is probably the best donut-type food I've ever had. (zing!!)
