Seeking car-rental help (one-way in Texas)

I wouldn't think this would be so complicated, but I've never rented a car one-way before and apparently that's not the easiest thing for some reason.

I'm trying to rent it from Longview, TX to Killeen, TX from 11/28 to 11/30. However, I can't seem to find ANY rental agencies that do this. Priceline and Hotwire don't, apparently. National, Budget and others don't.

The only one I can find it Advantage and it's $55 plus tax per day, which seems awfully steep when I hear about others getting cars for $20/$25 a day.

Am I just a bad searcher, or what?

Thanks in advance,
Chris

Most companies will do a one way rental, I've done it a few times. I think your problem is that Longview is not a big city and it's possible that Advantage is the only game in town, hence they will charge whatever they want. Also be advised that when you drive a rental car one way, there is usually a drop-off fee. Under these circumstances I don't think you will find anything for $20-$25/day.

The good news is that you are not a bad searcher. But sorry I couldn't help more.

Here's a wild idea--I looked at AA's web page and you could fly one way from Longview to Killeen for $93. Is that an option? It would be cheaper than renting a car.

Any chance you could pick up the car in Shreveport? It might be a little cheaper.

I agree with PM that flying will be the least expensive option. Or, check into Greyhound buses.

I think the problem you're running into is not only that Longview isn't a large city, but that you want to leave the car in Kileen. Since that's the nearest city to Ft. Hood, they probably have plenty of people who want to rent one-way to Ft. Hood and they don't want to get stuck with a lot of cars there. Not many people rent cars in Kileen/Ft Hood; they buy them. Unless you decide on alternative means of transport, I'm afraid you're stuck with Advantage.

Hertz wants $90 per day for that route so I guess you found a decent price, if the "drop fee" is included.

Aww, thanks everyone!

Advantage it appears to be - there will be three of us traveling so renting the car is cheaper than three plane tickets. Bummer on that!

$50/day is not bad, and since I have never really messed with car rentals before I was looking for the great deals - appears those are for same pickup/dropoff points, which makes sense.

Again, thanks everyone!
